POWERFUL AND BALANCED CARIGNAN
“Vigno (Vignadores de Carignan) is a collaborative project that operates like an Old World appellation to promote old vine Carignan from the Maule region of Chile. The group has strict regulations for production and marketing that all 17 member wineries must adhere to, including that wines must contain at least 85% old vine (at least 30 years old) dry farmed Carignan and be aged for at least two years. The label must feature VIGNO
prominently in large typeface. Carignan was widely planted in the Maule region following a devastating earthquake in 1939, but the variety gradually fell out of favor and the vines were abandoned and forgotten. Decades later, a group of enterprising vignerons saw the tremendous potential in these old vines and formed Vigno to preserve and promote wines made from dry farmed old vine Carignan from the Maule region.
We just received the stunning 98 point 2018 De Martino 'Vigno' Old Vines Dry Farmed Carignan, an incredibly complex and delicious wine that highlights how special the dry farmed old vine Carignan wines can be. Notes of the classic Chilean peppercorn are there, but so too are the deep blue fruits of
Carignan. Luis Gutierrez of the Wine Advocate describes it as 'a wine with power and balance.' We have been blown away by the big names of Chile like Almaviva, Seña, Clos Apalta but those are all in the $100+ category; this 98 point single vineyard Vigno is under $50! This is one of the most fascinating wines I have had in a long time. I
suggest you buy a bottle or two to try now, but also get a few to put away for a few years, because it is only going to get better!” – Glen Knight, The Wine House
