GREAT GRECHETTO FROM ORVIETO

“Over the past few years, I have seen a wonderful rediscovery of classic Italian wines, grapes, and wine regions. Many customers are experiencing for the first time the wines that built the Italian wine business, wines like Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Verdicchio, Fiano, and today's grape variety, Grechetto. Grechetto is most famous as the lead grape in Orvieto, the most celebrated wine region in Umbria.

Today's 95 point 2021 Castello di Titignano Salviano Grechetto transcends Orvieto. Tenuta di Salviano focuses and elevates this monovarietal to being one of the region's finest white wines. The Salviano estate is nestled among Umbria's rolling hills on the southern bank of Lake Corbara. This property is owned by the Incisa della Rocchetta family, owners of legendary Sassicaia. Their emphasis is always on quality not quantity, hence there are just under 300 cases of the Tenuta di Salviano Grechetto produced each vintage.

I have been a fan of this wine for years and I just learned that Salviano uses a unique and regionally specific Grechetto called Grechetto di Todi, which is an ancient indigenous grape from the lands surrounding the medieval village of Todi. At Salviano, the Grechetto di Todi grapes used to make this wine come from the best vineyards, which are between 20-25 years old, adding yet another dimension to this remarkable wine. With all of that said, we have just 76 bottles. (We had more, but I drank it, it's great juice!)

Winery Tasting Note
Crisp yet mouth filling at the same time. Aromas of white flowers, tropical fruits and notes of minerality lift out of the glass. Medium bodied with a nice balance between roundness and crispness, and a pleasant oiliness on the back palate. This is a very clean and pure example of Grechetto di Todi without any oak aging to ensure only the characteristics of this grape and the terroir are represented.

HARVEST NOTE
The 2021 growing season consisted of a cold and rainy winter but also an unusual warm temperature in early spring interrupted by a few days of freeze resulting in a lower grape production but with good quality. Manual harvest occurred in the early hours of the day to preserve the integrity of the grapes.

Grapes are hand harvested and selected in vineyard to ensure the best are used.
All vines are trained in a normal system of counter espalier and pruned with Guyot.
Average age of vine: Between 20 to 25 years.

TASTING NOTE

Bright and refreshing with aromas of white flowers and flavors of tropical fruit. There is also a strong, but pleasant mineral component that is very evident on the palate providing complexity and mouth feel.

FOOD PAIRING
A soft, easy drinking white that pairs well with pizza and pasta dishes. Also with meats like a grilled steak and pork.
