MARVELOUS IL MARRONETO

“Until now, the Brunellos that we’ve promoted for the epic 2019 vintage have been pre-arrivals, expected to arrive this spring and summer. However, the wines are beginning to show up in store, and we just received the multi-97 point 2019 Il Marroneto Brunello! Il Marroneto was founded in 1974 by Giuseppe Mori who worked with some of the best ‘Sangiovese whisperers’ (Mario Cortevesio and then his best friend, Giulio Gambelli) who had distinctly traditional philosophies for Brunello that include extended fermentations, long macerations and lengthy maturation in large format barrels. Their hands-off methods ensure greater transparency of site and allow for excellent structure and elegance in each wine Il Marroneto produces.

The winery is an insider’s favorite and one that flies a bit under the radar. The critics are full of superlatives for this wine! Monica Larner of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate praises the wine’s ‘soaring intensity and vibrant Sangiovese aromas… truly one of a kind.’ Other critics call it ‘stunning’ and ‘impeccable’ (Audry Frick, JebDunnuck.com), ‘Delicious’ (James Button, Decanter) and ‘spell-binding’ (Eric Guido, Vinous). This is a wine you don’t have to wait to pick up, and while you can pop the cork now, it will continue to evolve beautifully for many years. We also have a couple of magnums for those special occasions!” – Jim Knight, The Wine House
2019 Il Marroneto Brunello di Montalcino

750ml: $99.99
Magnum: $229.99

97 Points: “Alessandro Mori's wines are easy to spot in a blind tasting thanks to the soaring intensity and vibrant Sangiovese aromas they display. They are truly one of a kind. A wine that sees a relatively short and hot fermentation, the Il Marroneto 2019 Brunello di Montalcino respects local winemaking tradition and remains true in spirit. The steep verticality of the bouquet evokes almost-carbonic or lifted aromas of bright cherry, strawberry shortcake, lilac and heritage rose. You get straight to the heart of Sangiovese. The tannins are extremely fine and powdery and the freshness of the fruit is beautifully intact. This wine really pops in 2019. Drink Date: 2025 – 2048” – Monica Larner, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (December 2023)

97 Points: “The bright ruby 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino is another stunning 2019 on the nose, with bright, intense aromatics of rosewater, redcurrants, wild Mediterranean herbs, macchia, incense, anise, potpourri – it’s so distinctive yet always moving in the glass. Medium-bodied, with beautiful purity, it has ripe, fine tannins, is long on the palate for days, and has a weightless feel. This impeccable wine is phenomenal now, but it’s only going to improve over the coming 15-20 years. Maturity: 2024 – 2044” – Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck.com (February 2024)

97 Points: “Iacopo Mori described the 2019 vintage as ‘perfect, no disease...lots of fantastic grapes,’ when he visited Decanter in December 2023. Indeed, 2019 is looking superb across the board. Il Marroneto's Brunello di Montalcino 2019 has the most incredible scent; an enticing waft of aromatic cherry and fragrant violets. In the mouth it's supremely precise, with a silky texture and sweet red fruits. Intense, chiselled and sapid, there's a bewitching pureness and delicacy here. Delicious. Drinking Window: 2024 – 2036” – James Button, Decanter (December 2023)

95 Points: “A cascade of bright cherry, rose buds, lavender and cedary spice wafts up from the whimsically perfumed 2019 Brunello di Montalcino. This is surprisingly juicy yet quite complex, with hints of zesty orange and vibrant acidity that add tremendous energy as crisp clove-inflected red fruits drench the senses. It finishes with cheek-puckering tannins, yet they are sweet and round. The 2019 tapers off spicy and fresh, leaving lingering mint, violets and sweet herbal tea notes. Don’t be fooled by its energy and approachability; the 2019 holds a massive amount of power in reserve. This is a spell-binding Brunello from Il Marroneto. Drinking window: 2025 – 2036” – Eric Guido, Vinous (November 2023)

ABOUT IL MARRONETO

The legacy of Marroneto began in 1974, when Giuseppe Mori purchased a historic building north of Montalcino, dating back to 1246, originally used for chestnut drying ("marroni" in Tuscan dialect) and flour production. With his sons Andrea and Alessandro, Giuseppe planted the first 3000 meters of vineyards in 1975 with a focus on commitment to the land, steering their efforts not by business ambitions but by an authentic love for the territory.

The initial yields were vinified in 1976, and the pioneering bottled vintage arrived in 1980. In the 1990s, Alessandro Mori expanded the winery, propelling Il Marroneto into the ranks of the top 10 historical wineries in Montalcino today.

Situated at 430 meters in the province of Madonna delle Grazie, the estate benefits from cool night winds and temperature variations, creating an ideal environment for wines that are elegantly balanced, fresh, and fruit-forward.

Il Marroneto spans 8 hectares of Sangiovese planted on sandy, minerally soils (sabbione di mare). Seven hectares are devoted to the production of Brunello, while the remaining hectare is for the creation of Rosso di Montalcino. Guided by tradition and minimalism, vineyard management prioritizes quality, avoiding excessive treatments and intensive production.

I am a vineyard worker, my efforts culminate in harvest. Grapes are the end of my work, not the beginning. In the cellar we only protect what nature gave us, without bending it to our will.” – Alessandro Mori, Owner & Winemaker
