“I’ve been a huge fan of Yangarra wines over the years – they are hands down my favorite winery from McLaren Vale. Their consistent flavor concentration and depth at reasonable prices are what keep me coming back for more. I’m not the only one who’s noticed – their winemaker, Peter Fraser, was awarded Australia’s best winemaker in 2016 at James Halliday’s Wine Companion awards last year. Peter was selected from more than 1,300 Australian wineries to win this prestigious title.

Today’s wine, the 94-point 2016 Yangarra Estate PF Shiraz McLaren Vale Australia, is my ‘go to’ sipping wine for sitting on my Venice bungalow porch this summer. The ‘PF’ in the name refers to ‘preservative free’ – so not only is this wine biodynamic, made from grapes grown on their certified biodynamic single-estate vineyard, without herbicides, fungicides or synthetic chemicals, but also, there are no additions of any kind - sulphur (preservative), acid, tannin or finings. The purity of the Shiraz fruit comes through, and if you’re like me, once you start sipping this, you won’t want to stop! Enjoy!” – Glen Knight, The Wine House

94 Points
94 Points “Lifted nose of ripe fruit, flower, fresh leather and tar follow through a tight and concentrated center palate of dark fruits and a ultra-fine tannins. Linear and very fine grained. Impressive. Better in 2020. Screw cap.” – July 2017

WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTES: "While it's obviously a healthy, squeaky-clean presentation of young Shiraz, this is also a glass full of joy and laughter. It's bright and stimulating, but not light in any way other than mood - its tannins will see it cellar longer than, say, any nouveau Beaujolais, but as a young wine it's just as carefree in attitude. It's intense, dark and perhaps like fresh soft liquorice in a way. This is pure, audacious, open-hearted fun.” - Peter Fraser, Winemaker.

REGION: Estate grown in Kangarilla, McLaren Vale, SA

WINEMAKING INFORMATION: Shiraz was hand-picked from select blocks and received via a belt elevator (rather than a screw hopper which macerates the skins) and only de-stemmed. Whole berries were double sorted before being lightly broken and then placed into small open-top fermenters. No additives were used for the wine’s entire production. As with all of our wines, after a few days cold soaking, we allowed natural yeast fermentation and used a careful regime of plunging, and drain and returns to get the right balance of extraction. The wine was carefully pressed after 11 days on skins and allowed to complete malolactic fermentation prior to bottling, with no additions or fining, just filtration.

The Yangarra Estate Vineyard is a biodynamic wine farm located in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia. Our philosophy focuses on hand crafting authentic wines solely from our single-vineyard estate. The combination of rare geologies, moderate altitude, abundant sunshine, and cool evening breezes make it the perfect place to showcase the top grape varieties of the southern Rhone. Our respect for this special piece of land is reflected in the wines we make; a perfect transfer of terroir to glass.

Shiraz from the estate vineyard adopts a unique form compared to the typical McLaren Vale style. This is due to the cooler climate from the elevation and the evening breezes from the nearby Southern Lofty Ranges. Our Shiraz thus retains its concentration and complexity and exists to deliver the essence of this beautiful place to your glass.
