Please join us in a fantastic taste across Italy! This ‘tour’ includes Italy’s northernmost province of Alto Adige, with the wines of Terlano. This is a melting pot region in which the contrasts blend to form a harmonious whole. Alpine peaks go hand in hand with Mediterranean scenery, the German with the Italian language, centuries-old local traditions with an open eye for the modern world.

Our tour also features the iconic Brunellos from Silvio Nardi. Attendees will meet Emilia Nardi, owner and daughter of founder Silvio Nardi. Emilia is a distinguished leader in Brunello and one of the most respected women in the wine world.

From the Veneto region, another northern wine region, we are featuring the Amarone wines of Massimago. Our tour’s southernmost stop is Puglia, with one of the region’s hottest estates, Masseria Cuturi.

The Wine House is thrilled to welcome Thomas Schlumberger, 7th generation owner of Domaines Schlumberger, a biodynamic producer that is the largest holder of Grand Cru vineyards in Alsace. Domaines Schlumberger are estate winegrowers who exclusively harvest and produce their wines from their exceptional location situated on the steep hillsides of the Vosges Mountains. They use special horses to work the steepest terraces of vines, and employ specialized masons to maintain the dry stone walls of the terraces in the vineyards. These walls have made the Domaines Schlumberger famous as the “Mountain Winemakers”! Attendees will sample 8 wines, including 4 Grand Crus!

French Wine Scholar (FWS) Course Includes:

The French Wine Scholar Study and Certification program provides current, accurate and in-depth information on the wines and wine regions of France. Students of wine who follow this in-depth curriculum and pass the exam will earn the French Wine Scholar (FWS) post-nominal (e.g., John Smith, FWS).

French wine regions and styles are the “reference points” in the world of wine, making an in-depth understanding of French wine indispensable. The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is a suggested prerequisite for the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines course. Students learn the basics of wine in this entry-level course in a format specially designed for those with no previous wine knowledge. It is strongly recommended for consumers or those new to wine and focuses on the main styles of wines available, tasting technique, wine, and food pairing as well as wine service and etiquette.

The 6-hour course includes an exam with 30 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 45 minutes, printed study guide, tasting of 11 wines, food pairing exercises, and exam fee. Successful candidates receive a certificate and lapel pin for the internationally recognized WSET Level 1 Award in Wines.

Study materials available for pick up from The Wine House (2311 Cotner Ave, Los Angeles) as soon as you receive a confirmation email of your registration. It is advisable to pick up the materials before the class on Sunday, August 20, which will be taught at Wellesley Courtyard.

The Certified Sherry Wine Specialist (CSWS®) course is the most comprehensive ONLINE certification course on sherry wines, and it is now being offered IN-PERSON at the Wine House! The course was created by The House of Lustau, with the support of the Regulatory Council of Jerez guaranteeing the CSWS® program’s exceptional level of depth, accuracy, detail, and academic rigor as well as its impact on the global wine industry.

The Certified Sherry Wine Specialist program includes:

Two in-person classes:
– Session 1: Theory session, including instruction on the history of the sherry region, DO’s identity, viticulture, winemaking, aging, and diversity in the region
– Session 2: Tasting session, with six Lustau wines which illuminate the most classic styles of Sherry: Fino, Manzanilla, Amontillado, Oloroso, and Pedro Ximénez. Students will learn about food pairings and the best ways to serve sherry.

Textbook:
A digital textbook (the CSWS® manual) will be sent to students one week before the class begins for students who register at least a week prior to the start of the course. Later registrations will receive the digital textbook 48 hours before the course begins.

Exam: There will be a 50-question graded exam at the conclusion of the second session of the course. The award of “Certified Sherry Wine Specialist” will be granted to those with a minimum passing score of 75%. This Certificate of Achievement will be signed by both Lustau’s CEO and César Saldaña, President of the Regulatory Council of Jerez.

The Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 2 Award in Wines course is intended as vocational training in product knowledge for those employed in the drinks industry but who have little previous knowledge of the broad range of alcoholic beverages available. The qualification is suitable wherever a good level of product knowledge is required to underpin job skills and competencies. The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines course is also appropriate for those not employed in the drinks industry but who want a serious education in wine, and wish to broaden their knowledge in a structured way. Wine tasting is a part of every class. The WSET recommends that students complete at least 14 hours of personal study outside the classroom hours during their course of study.

The Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 3 Award in Wines (Advanced Certificate) course is intended to provide in-depth knowledge of a wide range of wines and is open to students who hold the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines or can demonstrate knowledge at Intermediate level through completion of equivalent education courses or sufficient wine trade experience. The WSET course covers wines of the world in considerable depth over 35 hours (including exam). 70 wines will be tasted, and all classes include tastings.

The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines requires students to prove competency in theory and tasting. The examination for the Advanced Certificate is in two parts, a theory examination of 50 multiple-choice questions and four short-answer questions and a tasting examination consisting of a blind tasting of two wines. The WSET recommends that students complete at least 56 hours of personal study outside the classroom hours during their course of study. The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines is a prerequisite for students wishing to progress to the Level 4 Diploma Course. Students cannot enroll in a Diploma course until they have passed the Level 3 Course.
