“It’s perfect timing for our allocation of 2016 CVNE Viña Real Rosado (aka Rosé) to arrive with the crazy heat we’ve been having this week here in Los Angeles! This light colored rosé (think Provence coloring – but made with Viura and Tempranillo grapes) is ideal for this heat wave - chill it down and cool off the rest of this week and through the weekend. We have a great price on this delicious rosé - it's under $11 a bottle! Buy a case today and enjoy all summer long!” - Jim Knight, Wine House

“...Ripe strawberry, orange and a hint of pungent flowers on the fragrant nose. Juicy citrus and red fruit flavors spread out slowly on the back half while picking up a suggestion of white pepper. Finishes juicy and smooth, featuring lingering spiciness and an echo of candied rose.” –Josh Raynolds, Vinous, June 2017

1920 the first Viña Real wines were launched, in which personality, character and elegance of Rioja Alavesa were clearly combined with the roundness and balance of a perfect aging.

Name of Wine: Viña Real
Type of Wine: Rosado
Region of Production: Rioja
Year: 2016
Grape Varieties: 85% Viura y, 15% Tempranillo

After the arrival to the winery of viura grape variety in perfect condition and after a maceration of barely 4 hours with 15% tempranillo, we obtain a bleeding by gravity, a must that will ferment for 20-25 days at a lower controlled temperature to 16ºC. With this we keep the primary aromas intact. After this we obtain a wine that will be ready for its release to the market.

Vintage / Harvest Description
We are facing a year of excellent quality in CVNE, characterized by the absence of rainfall from May to October. The year began with a warm, dry winter and a rainy spring start. A month of August with temperatures above the average and without rain delayed the vegetative cycle but arrived September with some precipitation giving a respite to the plant and allowing a good maturation of the grape resulting a late harvest, of great quality and with an excellent state sanitary.

Tasting Notes
Elegant pale pink with gray tones. Soft and intense aromas of stone fruits such as peach and apricot well complemented with floral aromas that gives it fineness and freshness. Its passage through the palate is cheerful and elegant due to its roundness and balance. The aftertaste is long and fruity being a perfect wine to take at any time, with or without accompaniment. If we want to combine, it is suitable for all kinds of salads, pastas, and vegetables.

The Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (CVNE), launched the Viña Real brand in the 1920s becoming one of the pioneering wineries in making crianza wines in oak barrels in this area. A careful balance between tradition and modernity has defined the form and content of Viña Real.

The grapes of the Rioja Alavesa are at the heart of this winery. The proximity of the vineyards to the old Camino Real inspired its name. And on that same terrain, integrated into a hill called the Cerro de la Mesa, rises a monumental fermenting vat covering nearly 30,000 square meters: the Viña Real building, an iconic 2004 design that succeeds in blending the Rioja orography into its very construction.

From the mountains of the Sierra de Cantabria the vineyards extend down the slope towards the Ebro river basin. The mountains protect this Rioja Alavesa subregion, where the Atlantic climate is combined with calcareous and clay-based soils.

The Viña Real winery in Laguardia, designed by French architect Philippe Mazières, is composed of three buildings. The main one is constructed with red cedar in the form of a fermenting vat. The natural light, the caves dug to store the wine and the leading-edge technology - with the use of gravity, the installation of the first vertical hopper in Spain - define this monumental work.
