The Wine House is thrilled to announce two new events: a Cru Bourgeois du Medoc Master Class, led by Mary Gorman-McAdams, MW and Monica Marin, Director of WSET Education Programs that includes three full-sized bottles of red Bordeaux wine, and a virtual tasting with Tercero Wines winemaker Larry Schaffer.

We continue to offer Level 1 and Level 2 of WSET (Wine and Spirit Education Trust) Award in Wine courses which have been adapted to use technology in the educational process to ensure student and instructor safety. Please see below for each course's details, as each course is structured differently.

As noted in Food & Wine, the Wine House was named one of ten of the “World’s Best Wine Shops.” In addition to being described as a “wine geek’s dream destination” with modest markups and excellent small-production offerings, we were noted for having “an impressive lineup of classes.” We are delighted to be able to offer various classes and tastings.

Cru Bourgeois du Medoc Master Class Webinar
Saturday, May 8
1:00 to 2:30 PM

Includes three 750ml bottles of wine in a gift box
$89

Join us on Saturday, May 8 at 1PM for a lunchtime Master Class webinar! Whether it’s an early Mother’s Day celebration or a lunchtime gathering among family or friends, this 90-minute webinar is a terrific opportunity to learn about a new three-tier classification system in Bordeaux – the Cru Bourgeois du Médoc. We are thrilled to welcome Mary Gorman-McAdams, MW, Bordeaux Wine Council’s Market Adviser for North America, who will join our own Monica Marin, Director of WSET Education Programs, to guide us through the new system and explain the real meaning of being a Cru Bourgeois. This webinar includes a gift box with 3 full-sized bottles of Cru Bourgeois, one of each level of the new classification system, as well as a few other surprise Cru Bourgeois goodies (maps, brochures…)!

This meaningful classification is a benefit for both consumers and producers. It reassures consumers about the quality and value of the wine they are buying and recognizes achievements by producers who invest in their properties. The classification begins with blind tasting of multiple vintages by independent judges to achieve the base level certification of Cru Bourgeois. Producers who wish to reach the two higher tiers, Supérieur and Exceptionnel, must also be assessed for their environmental practices, winemaking techniques and marketing/promotion practices. The updated classification system rewards producers who invest in their properties for the long term.

This Master Class webinar will have a wine from a producer in each of the three tiers: Cru Bourgeois, Cru Bourgeois Supérieur and Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel.

The full-sized bottles included in this webinar are:
2016 Château Grand Médoc – Cru Bourgeois
2016 Château Poitevin, Médoc – Cru Bourgeois Supérieur
2016 Château Lilian Ladouys, Saint-Estèphe – Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel

There will also be a video presentation from winemakers from Château Poitevin and Lilian Ladouys.

The webinar will be recorded in case you cannot attend live.

We urge customers to pick up their wines, which are packaged in a gift box with the extras from the Association des Crus Bourgeois, from our store. If you wish to have the wines shipped to you, please call the store (310-479-3731) to arrange. We regret that if we ship the wines, they will not be in the gift box.

Note: Cancellations must be received at least 72 hours before start time for a refund or transfer to another class or event. No cancellations after wines are picked up or shipped.

The Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 2 Award in Wines course is intended as vocational training in product knowledge for those employed in the drinks industry but who have little previous knowledge of the broad range of alcoholic beverages available. The qualification is suitable wherever a good level of product knowledge is required to underpin job skills and competencies. The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines course is also appropriate for those not employed in the drinks industry but who want a serious education in wine and wish to broaden their knowledge in a structured way.

The course is based around a 5-week, 6-module online program with a recommendation of 6 hours study per week to cover the online activities and read the relevant chapters in the textbook (30 hours total for the course). Regular access and participation in the course online activities is essential for this mode of study. This course includes a 6-wine tasting kit and a live webinar tasting led by Monica Marin, FWS/DWS, and nominee for WSET Educator of the Year 2019.

The online course structure allows the student to work ahead or catch up on the activities and forums. There are no set times to log into the course as there are no live chats or webinars, except for the tasting webinar (Wednesday, May 12 at 6:30PM, which will be recorded for students who can’t attend live) and the exam on June 19 at 10AM.

Learn more about this course.

CANCELLATIONS: Because student information will be submitted to the WSET on Sunday, May 2, cancellations are only accepted for this class until May 1, and all bookings are final after that. There can be no refunds after the student’s registration is submitted to the WSET.

Virtual Tasting with Tercero Wines Winemaker
Larry Schaffer

Thursday, May 13, 6:00 to 7:30 PM
Includes five 4oz wine samples
$75
Includes five 750ml bottles
$135
Join an exclusive Wine House Virtual Tasting with Larry Schaffer, winemaker of Tercero Wines, at 6PM on Thursday, May 13. This tasting includes five 4oz bottles of wine to enjoy during the tasting! Or you can opt for 5 full bottles of great wine!

No one in the industry is more adept at winemaking as well as explaining the winemaking process in a way that everyone can grasp. This will be a lively and entertaining session, so join us as Larry discusses five of his wines, from both current and older vintages. A graduate of UC Davis’ excellent viticulture program, Larry worked for 10 years as winemaker for Fess Parker Winery before starting his own Tercero brand. Larry often foot-stomps his grapes and makes his wines with incredible attention to detail. Based in Los Olivos in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley outside of Santa Barbara and using fruit from some of the area’s best vineyard sites, Tercero produces small-lot, hand-crafted wines.

The following five wines will be tasted:
2020 Clairette Blanche: This white “Spring and Summer in the bottle” is bright, fresh and minerally — think oysters or mussels.
2016 Grenache Blanc: Aged 16 months in older oak, this white wine is full of texture with good acidity.
2020 Cinsault Rosé: Foot stomped, pressed, and then fermented at cooler temperatures, this wine is aromatic, fruity, and floral as well as the lightest-color rosé you will ever see.
2017 Cinsault: One of the lesser-known Rhône varieties makes a beautiful, lighter textured red wine. It’s foot-stomped, fermented 100% whole cluster with stems, pressed, and then aged 16 months in older French oak barrels.
2014 Mourvèdre, Santa Barbara County: A blend of three different vineyard sites throughout the Santa Ynez Valley, this 100% whole cluster wine is aged 34 months in older French oak barrels creating a great blend of fruit and earth.

The bottles will be available for pickup from Friday, May 7.

Note: Cancellations must be received at least 48 hours before start time for a refund or transfer to another class or event. No cancellations after wines are picked up or shipped.

This WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is a 4-week, 7 module online learning program with educator support available during the course. The course material should take about 6 hours in total to complete, plus revision time. Regular access and participation in the course online activities is essential for this mode of study.

The course prepares the student for WSET qualifications and they are guided by a WSET online educator. Students can contact the educator any time for the duration of the scheduled course, should they have any questions. Each module includes a series of independent activities to help students understand the differences between grape varieties and types and styles of wine.
