BRILLIANT BAROLO

“With all of the hype surrounding the 2016 Barolo vintage, I understand why the 2017 Barolo vintage could be overlooked. But I encourage you not to dismiss the 2017s, as it has produced a number of absolutely remarkable wines. The warm 2017 vintage has rewarded us with an array of wonderfully rich Barolos that will drink much earlier than the 2016s. They are powerfully built, and deliver beautifully expansive aromatics. The 97 point 2017 Guido Porro Vigna Santa Caterina is a perfect example, igniting hedonistic excitement on both the nose and the palate. Guido Porro is one of the oldest estates in Barolo and this wine qualifies as both a ‘best-buy’ of the vintage (under $50), as well as being one of the ‘best wines’ (97 points) of the vintage. The Santa Caterina is a subtle and elegant Barolo, and it will disappear quickly.” – Lance Montalto, The Wine House

2017 Guido Porro,
Vigna Santa Caterina, Barolo,
Serralunga d'Alba

97 Points Decanter
Release Price: $59.99
Wine House: $49.99

97 Points: “The one-hectare Vigna Santa Caterina vineyard lies behind the Guido Porro estate in Serralunga, within the Lazzarito MGA at 400 metres on clay and limestone soil. The wine is fermented in concrete with indigenous yeast then fermented in large Slavonian oak casks (15-25hL). Blood orange, olives, cinnamon, camphor...the vibrancy of this wine is stunning. On the palate it is firm and velvety, with a slightly dusty Nebbiolo texture, lifted acidity and a mineral-laden finish. A great wine focused on elegance, this is precise and long-lasting with an impressive savouriness; I would even say salty. Drinking Window 2021 – 2040.” – Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter (March2021)

FROM THE IMPORTER

“In Serralunga d’Alba, the combination of full sun exposure and limestone-rich marl soils yields ripe, fleshy, structured Barolos that can stand the test of time. Guido Porro’s Santa Caterina is a perfect example of the finesse, complexity, and longevity this cru can achieve, specifically when crafted via traditional production methods such as spontaneous fermentation, long macerations, and extensive aging in enormous Slavonian oak casks. These techniques produce a Barolo with delicate and nuanced aromas backed by a deep, chewy structure that promises a slow and steady evolution throughout the years—twenty years or more, if you so wish. To best enjoy it young, decant it for an hour or two and serve with richly flavored pastas, a rustic bollito (boiled meat with a bright mostarda), or other typical Piemontese dishes.” – Anthony Lynch
