92 Points: “Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2016 Pinot Noir Van Der Kamp Vineyard is scented of violets, chocolate covered cherries and black raspberries with notions of tilled
soil and potpourri. Medium to full-bodied and packed with fragrant black and red fruits, it has a solid frame of fine-grained tannins and great freshness, finishing long and layered. Drink dates 2018-2025.” - Lisa Perrotti Brown, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (June 2018)
91+ Points: “From a site on Sonoma Mountain and old vines going back to the 1960s, the 2016 Pinot Noir Van der Kamp Vineyard gives up some blue fruits, plums, candied violets and cedary notes, medium body, fine tannin, and a fresh, lively profile. Drink it over the coming 7-8 years.
This is another terrific set of releases from Adam Lee, who pulls from some great vineyards in the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast. As with a number
of talented winemakers, Adam has continued to fine tune his approach to winemaking and his wines today show a more nuanced, elegant style, all while not sacrificing depth or richness.” – Jeb Dunnuck (June 2018)
91 Points: “The 2016 Pinot Noir Van Der Kamp Vineyard is gracious and airy in the glass, with lovely aromatic complexity and less overt fruit than is found in many of the other wines in the range. Readers should expect a gracious, understated style. Here, too, my impression is that the wine will be even better in another few months, once the whole clusters assimilate into the wine
more fully. Drinking window 2018-2024.” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous (April 2018)
FROM THE WINERY
About The Wine
The Van der Kamp Vineyard has been in our vineyard portfolio since 1996, making it one of longest standing sources. On the western side of Sonoma Mountains, the vines are directly in the line of fog and winds off the Pacific Ocean and in through the Petaluma Gap. This allows our average harvest dates at Van der Kamp to be virtually the same as those on the far Sonoma Coast.
Aromatics: Earthy, savory, bright red fruit Palate: Bright red cherry and pomegranate. Fine grained tannins with focused finish. Alcohol: 14.1% Aging: 40% new French oak for 9 months Clones: 23, 777, 828, Pommard
VINTAGE NOTES The 2016 vintage was a surprise
vintage for Siduri. It was yet another year of drought and, after the tiny 2015 crop, we expected 2016 to be another small crop. Instead the 2016 vintage yielded a slightly larger than normal crop of outstanding Pinot Noir clusters. The vintage was an earlier ripener with harvest commencing in mid-August. Fortunately, the weather never turned too hot, and the grapes that we harvested were of fantastic quality. Wine writer Antonio Galloni said this about the vintage, “Simply put, 2016 is one of the most consistently brilliant and alluring young vintages I have ever tasted in Sonoma.”
WINEMAKING NOTES Moderate yields and mild September weather provided a crop with ripe, fleshy tannins and
aromatic finesse. The lack of weather events during harvest allowed the different clonal blocks to be picked in four separate passes, so that peak maturity was reached on all clones. The 2016 blend shows the classic earthy and savory aromatics that Van der Kamp is known for, as well as bright cherry and pomegranate, all framed by fine-grained tannins which focus the flavors on the finish. We utilized about 33% stem inclusion in the fermentation to add backbone and lift aromatics. The wine was aged in 40% new French oak barrels and then bottled un-fined, unfiltered.
