BRUNELLO FOR THE HOLIDAYS

“The Brunello hits keep on coming this holiday season with this epic 2016 vintage. The most highly anticipated Brunello di Montalcino vintage ever, I might add (again). Today we have two of my personal favorite Brunello producers, Ciacci Piccolomini and Podere Brizio.

Ciacci Piccolomini, one of the most sought-after producers in all of Italy, have outdone themselves in terms of quality and price points with their 2016 Brunellos! Their Brunellos emphasize finesse and balance, with layers of ultrafine tannins and subtle ripe fruit, and they age incredibly well. The 97 point 'classic' label of Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona Brunello crushes the 2010 and surpasses the 2015, making it the best classic label Brunello the winery has produced. The winery is producing their finest wines ever, but we have extremely limited quantities.

Podere Brizio is part of a promising network of wineries all belonging to the Alejandro Bulgheroni Family Vineyards, which may mean nothing to you, but they are the owners of another of my favorite Brunello estates, Poggio Landi (makers of the 97 Point Poggio Landi, this year’s #12 Wine of the Year, Wine Spectator Top 100). The Podere Brizio estate, as we know it today, was created in 1996 by Roberto Bellini when he sold most of his stake in the Pieve di Santa Restituta property to Angelo Gaja. Bellini, claims to have retained the best hectares of Pieve for himself in order to create his own wines. We now see and taste every bit of that brilliant move in his 96 point Podere Brizio Brunello.” – Lance Montalto, The Wine House

2016 Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona Brunello di Montalcino
97 Points Wine Enthusiast
95+ Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
95 Points James Suckling
Release Price: $100
Wine House: $61.99

97 Points: “Red-berry, wild-rose, crushed mint and dark-spice aromas are front and center on this fragrant red. The full-bodied palate is concentrated but also boasts finesse, offering layers of raspberry jam, smooth licorice and tobacco alongside a backbone of enveloping, velvety tannins. You'll also detect the warmth of alcohol but the succulent fruit stands up to it. Drink 2024-2036.” – Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast (May 2021)

95+ Points:
“The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino (with 56,000 bottles made) shows bold cherry, spice, crushed stone and balsam herb that come together in seamless fashion. This estate has honed a unique style that becomes a common theme traced to each new vintage. I'd describe it as delicate but also succulent with a rich and almost pulpy quality of fruit. The wine is fueled by the golden light that hits this part of Tuscany in those last hours of the day. Here is a wine that shows spirit of place. Drink dates 2024-2040.” – Monica Larner, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (November 2020)

95 Points: “Lots of red and blue fruit to this, evolving into wet leaves, freshly turned soil and brewed tea. Light herbal notes. Sweet cherries, too. It's full bodied with silky, firm tannins. More minerality and tea notes on the finish. Elegant and driven. Drink after 2023.” – James Suckling (April 2021)

2016 Podere Brizio
Brunello di Montalcino
96 Points Wine Spectator
95 Points Decanter
94 Points James Suckling

Release Price: $70
Wine House: $56.99

96 Points: “Rose, currant and cherry aromas and flavors are the hallmarks of this pretty red. Wild herb, graphite and tobacco accents add depth, and this cruises to a lingering aftertaste of red fruit and mineral. Delicate, yet tense and structured. Best from 2025 through 2047.” – Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (June 2021)

95 Points: “Established in 2013 by the Alejandro Bulgheroni Family Vineyards Group, the Podere Brizio estate sits on the South-West facing Montalcino hills, in a unique setting nestled among olive groves. With 11.5 hectares of vineyards in Montalcino's hottest area, the winery focuses on sustainable viticulture philosophies and true expression of terroir within the wines. The hand harvested grapes are traditionally vinified in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts, before ageing for 12 months in large untoasted French oak casks. Nicolas Clerc MS: Precise nose, superb and floral. Elegant and delicate berry fruit, with racy mineral complexity. Balanced, harmonious and long. A class act. Aldo Fiordelli: Extremely well balanced wine with bergamot notes and an almost orange peel tinge. Slightly austere on the tannins, however not without character. Very classic. Susan Hulme MW: Sweet black cherry aromas, almost toffee-like sweetness too. Rich, ripe and complete without being heavy. Lots of savoury tannins and juicy, mouthwatering acidity to keep freshness. Really appealing, yet serious too. Drinking Window 2019 – 2025.” Nicolas Clerc MS, Aldo Fiordellli, Susan Hulme MW, Decanter (June 2019)

94 Points: “This is a cooler style of Brunello with blueberries, black cherries, crushed stones and lavender. It’s full-bodied with firm, tight tannins. Yet, it opens at the end to pinpointed fruit and tannins. Give this time to soften. Try after 2024.” James Suckling (November 2020)
