"The Willamette Valley Wine Auction is one of the most fun charity events I attend. I went to college up in Oregon and I just love it up there. The good news for you is bad news for my bottom line, because I have decided to blow out last year's auction lots at below cost so I can go again this year! Each auction lot is unique, and while the auction is mostly Pinot Noir, I picked up an amazing Chardonnay that blew me away!

About that Chardonnay... it’s a collaboration between Shane Moore of Gran Moraine (noted for their wines produced in the tradition of classic burgundies) and Jason Lett, son of the legendary David Lett, who planted the first Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines in the Willamette Valley and established Eyrie Vineyards. When noted British wine writer and critic Jancis Robinson did a commemorative tasting of Eyrie Vineyards wines in 2015, she declared the Eyrie white wines (Chardonnay and Pinot Gris) to be the ‘real revelation’ and was struck by their vivacity – especially the ones that were decades old! This wine is a collaboration between Jason and Shane, aka the 2017 ‘Harold and Maude’ Chardonnay, and it exceeded my expectations. So even though this was a Pinot Noir auction, I had to bring this one in!

I also brought in the 2017 Elk Cove Vineyards ‘Thunderdome’ Pinot Noir, which comes from a unique block of vines at the top of Mount Richmond. It was made by Adam Campbell, a second-generation winemaker and a 5th generation Oregon farmer, whose parents are also considered one of the founding families in the Willamette Valley. When they started making wine in the 70s, there were fewer than 10 wineries in Oregon... forty years later, there are over 700! If you have ever experienced single-vineyard wines from Adam at Elk Cove, you know what a treat they are... and if you haven’t, this is the time to try! This five-case lot is a barrel selection from our Mount Richmond East Vineyard. We like to call this site the "Thunderdome" because of its inverted bowl-shape. If you stand at its peak overlooking the Yamhill Valley, you might hear the echoing sound of bull elk clashes. This hilltop has very little to no top soil and great drainage, which is fantastic for growing Pinot noir. Spice-driven aromatics introduce the powerful and concentrated black fruit of this complex wine. Its intense flavors of Italian plum are balanced by a deep earthiness. This wine will age beautifully.
