A NOD TO NAPA WITH TWO 97 POINT WINES

“For over fifty years, the Trefethen name has been synonymous with outstanding California wines; they established the Oak Knoll District AVA and have championed sustainable farming for three generations. Their Chardonnay gained worldwide attention in 1979, when it was named ‘The Best Chardonnay in the World’ at the ‘Olympiad du Vin’ (Wine Olympics) in Paris. It was one of the largest wine tastings in history and the Trefethen Chardonnay triumphed again at a repeat tasting six months later in Burgundy.

Trefethen has done it again with dual 97 point scores for the 2018 Trefethen Chardonnay and the 2017 Trefethen Cabernet Sauvignon at the Decanter World Wine Awards, the world’s largest and most prestigious wine competition, where over 16,000 wines are tasted blind. The 2018 Trefethen Chardonnay was named a Platinum Award winner (the ONLY white wine from the US to win that designation) and the 2017 Trefethen Cabernet was named ‘Best in Show.’ Best of all, the Trefethen family never got on the bandwagon of raising prices to the point that no one can afford to drink their wines, so they are now, and always have been, reasonably priced wines. Given that they have some of the best pedigrees in Napa Valley, we are thrilled to have both of these award-winning wines, but supplies are limited and demand is high, so don’t wait! Enjoy!” – Glen Knight, The Wine House

97 Points Platinum Award: “A delicious, enticing Chardonnay which draws you into the glass with its fresh lemon rind and pith characters, balanced by a touch of perfectly judged oak sweetness. Very textural, showing strident fruit and a juicy finish.” – Decanter World Wine Awards (September 2020)

FROM THE WINERY

THE VINTAGE
Ample rainfall in the spring recharged the soil profile and provided a strong start to the growing season. The weather during the summer featured consistent warmth and sunshine without any major heat spells. Cooler than average temperatures in August and September slowed the ripening process, providing long hang time and leading to complex flavor development. October was mostly dry and warmer than usual allowing us to pick each block at optimal ripeness. The harvest was complete before November and the start of an epic rainy season.

THE WINE
Aromas of lemon and lime are complemented by a touch of apple blossom and white peach. Subtle notes of toasted oak frame the palate which features more citrus flavors and hints of apple and pear. The lively acidity brings great balance and the finish is refreshing and smooth.

FOOD AFFINITIES
The bright citrus notes of this wine make it a perfect match for shellfish and tarragon. Try a simple dish of salt and pepper shrimp or caramelized jumbo scallops over rice. Also try adding tarragon to fresh goat cheese

2017 Trefethen Cabernet Sauvignon
97 Points Decanter
Winery Price: $65
Wine House: $49.99
2 or more $44.99
97 Points: Platinum - Best in Show: “One of the compelling reasons for the 'nesting' of Napa's AVAs is to prove just how different the Valley's sub-districts can be, something that this wine from Oak Knoll makes admirably clear. The wine is a dark opaque black, but its soft, respiring resins and calmly ordered fruits alert the drinker from the aromatic profile alone that the wine has nothing monstrous or disproportionate about it. It's ripe but supple and graceful, with as much juicy acidity as textured tannins: drinkable, accessible and fresh. The Napa hallmark of opulence is there in the succulent grain of the fruit, but in every other respect this is deft, finely judged midweight.” – Decanter World Wine Awards (September 2020)

FROM THE WINERY

THE VINTAGE
Record-breaking winter rains filled our reservoirs and recharged the soil. Spring and early summer were warm, leading to very strong growth in the vines. The rest of the summer was more typical with warm days and cool nights, providing perfect conditions for the developing grapes. Our yields for the season were slightly lower than average and the resulting wines are classic.

THE WINE
Ripe, focused flavors of cherry, boysenberry, and blackcurrant are complemented by soft notes of cedar, bay leaf, and a savory earthiness. On the palate, this wine has a fruit-driven entry balanced with firm tannins that give way to a lush, lingering finish.

FOOD AFFINITIES
This wine shines with red meats and copious amounts of thyme and black pepper. Chef Chris Kennedy recommends using them to marinate a filet of beef or to finish a red wine sauce. Not a big red meat eater? One of his other favorite go-to dishes for this wine is ahi tuna crusted in black pepper
