FOUR OLDER VINTAGE, SPECTACULAR BRUNELLOS

“We recently had a direct import container arrive, with some outstanding back vintage Brunellos. Today we are focusing on two producers from two of the most talked about and sought after Brunello vintages of all time, the back-to-back and epic 2015s and 2016s. The two estates in focus today, Fanti and San Polino, have produced some of their finest wines to date and, because these four wines were directly imported, some are the best prices in the country!

The Fanti Family has been producing wine in Tuscany for nearly 200 years. In the 1970s, current owner Filippo first took over the Estate, marking a major turning point in its history. After redesigning and replanting across its 300 hectare property, an innovation-meets-tradition winemaking technique has resulted in extremely high-quality grape growing, all while avoiding any non-organic fertilizers. Today we are offering the 95 point 2015 Fanti Brunello di Montalcino and the 97 point 2015 Fanti Brunello di Montalcino Vallocchio.

Historically, the farmstead that is now San Polino has included viticulture since before 1581. Luigi and Katia Fabbro took over the property in 1990 and replanted much of the tiny estate, which now has 4.5 hectares under vine. This is truly a small, family-run farm in Montalcino. San Polino is certified organic, practices biodynamics, and uses natural fermentation with only indigenous yeasts. This is one of the smaller Brunello houses and a must try for all Brunello lovers. The wines on offer are the 97 point 2016 San Polino Brunello di Montalcino and the 98 point 2016 San Polino Brunello di Montalcino Helichrysum.” – Lance Montalto, The Wine House

2015 Fanti Brunello di Montalcino
95 Points James Suckling
93+ Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Release Price: $53
Wine House: $45.99
Best price in the country!

95 Points: “There’s a beautiful interplay between bright, primary florals, such as rose petals and tulips and dust, hay bale and dried raspberries. The palate suggests a ripe, powerful persona with chewy, juicy tannins and a fine line of pretty acidity. Best ever. Drink from 2022.” – James Suckling (September 2020)

93+ Points: The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino reveals an elegant bouquet with bright aromas of wild berry, blue flower and soft spice. These elements are carefully balanced to build the intensity and subtle but enduring power of the wine. There is firm structure at the back, and the wine is defined by its attractive but integrated acidity. You have all the essentials here for a pairing of hearty cheese ravioli topped with black truffle shavings.” – Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (October 2020)

2015 Fanti Brunello di Montalcino Vallocchio
97 Points James Suckling
94 Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Release Price: $70
Wine House: $54.99
Best price in the country!

97 Points: “What a nose of dried meat, tar, tobacco, dried boysenberries, red licorice and baking spices. Hearty tannins surround the full-bodied palate from every side, wringing bursting acidity from a full-throttle core of ripe, chewy fruit. The power and intensity are undeniable, but as you seep in the rich dried spices and died meat on the finish, you catch a glimpse of crystalline acidity through the looking glass. Drink from 2025.” – James Suckling  (September 2020)

94 Points: The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Vallocchio shows depth and a more sophisticated approach with ample textural richness and more evident spice and smoke from its oak aging. However, the style fundamentally embraces the same lithe and lifted elegance that we saw in Fanti's classic Brunello. The color saturation of the Vallocchio is a degree or two darker, and the bouquet reveals dark cherry, tilled earth, cola and smoked cedar wood. Give the wine a few more years in your cellar to flesh out.” – Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (October 2020)

2016 San Polino Brunello di Montalcino
97 Points James Suckling
97 Points Wine Enthusiast
Release Price: $70
Wine House: $62.99

97 Points: “Attractive aromas of cherry, dark mushroom, bark and walnut follow through to a full body with lots of ripe cherry and berry character in the center palate. Firm, chewy tannins draw you down the palate. Extremely long. From organically grown grapes. Better than the superb 2015? Drink after 2023 and onwards.” – James Suckling (July 2021)

97 Points: “Made with organically grown Sangiovese and fermented with wild yeasts, this fragrant, earthy red has intense aromas of rose petal, forest floor, new leather, woodland berry and balsamic whiffs of camphor. Full bodied and savory, the palate doles out juicy Marasca cherry, blood orange, licorice and tobacco alongside bright acidity and a backbone of noble tannins. It's still youthfully austere, with great aging potential. Drink 2026–2046.” – Kerin O'Keefe, Wine Enthusiast (May 2021)

2016 San Polino Brunello
di Montalcino Helichrysum
98 Points James Suckling
97 Points Decanter
96 Points Wine Enthusiast
94 Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Release Price: $80
Wine House: $68.99
Best price in the country!

98 Points: “Wow. This is really complex on the nose with black cherries, mushrooms, dried flowers and cedar. Some crushed stone and dry earth or tile. This is full-bodied and very layered with wonderful depth of fruit and creamy tannins. It’s focused and serene.” – James Suckling (July 2021)

97 Points: “Helichrysum comes from the southeast, in the area of Podernovi where high altitudes counter the warmth. The vines are pruned closely to give low-yields of grapes with thick skins and less juice. More powerfully structured than the estate Brunello, this is mouthfilling and expansive. Baked asphalt and iron lend intrigue to youthfully exuberant plum and wild strawberry. The tannins seem to grab at every part of the mouth with a sandy, grainy texture, and the persistent finish features clove and allspice. Tons of energy here. Drinking Window 2024 - 2039” – Michaela Morris,  Decanter (March 2021)

96 Points: Aromas of berry, new leather, rose and licorice waft out of the glass on this firmly structured wine. On the assertive palate, drying, close-grained tannins weave through dried cherry, star anise, toasted nut and roasted coffee bean. Made with organically farmed grapes, it also undergoes spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts. It's still young and bracing so give it time to fully develop. Drink 2026–2036.” – Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast (May 2021)

94 Points: Made with certified organic fruit, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Helichrysum opens to full-bodied richness and concentration. It reveals a dark and velvety side to Sangiovese, and it shows the latitude of the grape, thanks to its fresh acidity and tannic structure. This special selection (with 6,000 bottles made) will benefit from more years in the cellar, but among these new Brunello releases from 2016, this wine should also perform nicely in a near or medium-term drinking scenario, maybe at your favorite Italian restaurant with ravioli in wild boar sauce.” – Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (November 2020)
