This week, we have two in-store tastings: this Wednesday, March 15 is our In-Store Sparkling Wine Event with Gusbourne, and Friday, March 17 is our In-Store Legends of Tuscany Tasting, Featuring the Wines of Il Borro & Avignonesi. We have also added a new WSET Level 1 Award in Wines class in April (details below).

We continue to offer various levels of WSET (Wine and Spirit Education Trust) Award in Wines courses, as well as the WSET Level 1 Award in Sake in March (which now has a waitlist). Some courses have been adapted to use technology in the educational process for flexibility and additional learning; all classes are currently primarily in-person. Please see below for each course's details, as each course is structured differently.

As noted in Food & Wine Magazine, the Wine House was named one of ten of the "World’s Best Wine Shops." In addition to being described as a "wine geek’s dream destination" with modest markups and excellent small-production offerings, we were noted for having "an impressive lineup of classes."

ABOUT GUSBOURNE
At Gusbourne, the goal is simple: to create the finest wines in the world. A deep respect for nature, an uncompromising quest for quality, and a fastidious approach to detail is at the heart of everything at Gusbourne. The vineyards, planted in 2004, are predominantly Burgundian clones. All grapes are sourced from estate vineyards. Combining age-old traditions with modern technology & cutting-edge equipment allows Gusbourne to sit between old and new world winemaking. Debut vintages of Brut 2006 & Blanc de Blanc 2006 were released in 2010 to critical acclaim.

Patrick Piuze burst onto the French Chablis scene in 2008 and has succeeded in becoming one of its most respected winemakers. We invite you to join us along with the incomparable Aline Thiebaut of Aline Wines in an exploration of his impeccable offerings. We will taste 9 of his current releases, ranging from Bourgogne Blanc to Chablis Grand Cru. Taste how expressive and charismatic Chardonnay can be in the hands of a master!

When reviewing Patrick’s 2020 releases, William Kelley of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate wrote that the wines are "elegantly textural but incisive, clearly differentiated by site. This is also the best address to explore the village-level Chablis AOC, as Piuze produces a number of cuvées and lieu-dit bottlings designed to highlight the diversity that this large appellation encompasses.” (Read more of Kelley's review here.)

The class consists of 6 hours of instruction that concludes with a short 30-question multiple-choice exam of 45 minutes. Successful candidates receive the internationally-recognized WSET Level 1 Award in Sake. WSET Level 1 Award in Sake is strongly recommended for those who have little training in or knowledge of sake.

The Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 2 Award in Wines course is intended as vocational training in product knowledge for those employed in the drinks industry but who have little previous knowledge of the broad range of alcoholic beverages available. The qualification is suitable wherever a good level of product knowledge is required to underpin job skills and competencies. The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines course is also appropriate for those not employed in the drinks industry but who want a serious education in wine, and wish to broaden their knowledge in a structured way. Wine tasting is a part of every class. The WSET recommends that students complete at least 14 hours of personal study outside the classroom hours during their course of study.

This IN-PERSON course includes:
All printed study materials
Three full days of in-person instruction, including tasting of over 40 wines, with exam at the end of third class
Exam fees for in-person exam
Frameable certificate and lapel pin (for students who pass the exam)

The Wine House is thrilled to welcome Brittany Sherwood, Winemaker for Heitz Cellar, the highly acclaimed Napa winery. Brittany joined Heitz in 2013, and her approach to winemaking is one of minimal intervention that highlights each vineyard’s unique qualities as well as vintage expression. “I want to craft wines that are respectful of both the site and the vintage and that showcase these qualities in a fresh, age-worthy, classic style,” she says. Join us as Brittany pours five wines including four Cabernet Sauvignons from this iconic producer!

Join us to sample 15+ Greek wines featuring small production reds and whites from both the mainland and the islands. Wine has been an important part of Greek culture for over 4,000 years! Due to investment and a focus on quality over recent decades, there are now many Greek producers who make world-class wines. With a plethora of indigenous varieties, Greece produces a dazzling array of interesting, food friendly wines, and we are thrilled to share some of our favorites with you.

The Wine House is delighted to welcome Chris Williams who will pour wines from Meerlust Estate. Long recognized for producing world-class, iconic wines, Meerlust has been the pride of the Myburgh family since 1756. Today, the traditional dedication to the art of winemaking continues under the guidance of Hannes Myburgh, eighth generation custodian of this seventeenth-century national monument.

Meerlust, with its historic manor house, classic wine cellar, family cemetery, dovecote and bird sanctuary, is situated fifteen kilometers south of Stellenbosch, with the blue crescent of False Bay a mere five kilometers away. Wines are only made from grapes grown on the Estate which is uniquely positioned for the production of wines with exceptional complexity and character. Chris will pour two vintages of Meerlust “Rubicon,” one of the great Bordeaux blends produced in the Cape, made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Greg Sherwood MW writes, “Meerlust Rubicon is undoubtedly one of South Africa’s greatest wine ambassadors.”

The Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 3 Award in Wines (Advanced Certificate) course is intended to provide in-depth knowledge of a wide range of wines and is open to students who hold the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines or can demonstrate knowledge at Intermediate level through completion of equivalent education courses or sufficient wine trade experience. The WSET course covers wines of the world in considerable depth over 35 hours (including exam). Over 65 wines will be tasted, and all 5 classes include tastings.

Five days of in-person instruction, including tasting of over 65 wines
One review session

The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is a suggested prerequisite for the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines course. Students learn the basics of wine in this entry-level course in a format specially designed for those with no previous wine knowledge. It is strongly recommended for consumers or those new to wine and focuses on the main styles of wines available, tasting technique, wine, and food pairing as well as wine service and etiquette.

The 6-hour course includes an exam with 30 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 45 minutes, printed study guide, tasting of 11 wines, food pairing exercises, and exam fee. Successful candidates receive a certificate and lapel pin for the internationally recognized WSET Level 1 Award in Wines.

With 2 classes, this course allows more time for exam preparation. There is free parking for students in the building.

Study materials available for pick up from The Wine House (2311 Cotner Ave, Los Angeles) as soon as you receive a confirmation email of your registration. It is advisable to pick up the materials before the first class on April 20 at Wellesley Courtyard.
