"The Wine House's best and fastest-selling Vino Nobile ever was the 2013 Tenuta di Gracciano della Seta Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. It you were fortunate enough to have tried this wine, it was stunning, yet long sold out. Today we have the 2016 Tenuta Gracciano della Seta Vino Nobile, the wine that surpasses the 2013 and is among one of the finest ever produced. The Gracciano estate is one of the oldest wineries in the Montepulciano region, dating back to the 19th century and their 2016 Vino Nobile is a must for all lovers of classic Sangiovese. I have had few wines that deliver as much as this wine does for so little money. Rated 93 points and under $25 a bottle, this is the wine you buy a case of and enjoy drinking over the next 20 years.

I love Vino Nobiles; they are among some of the best of the traditional Tuscan reds. The region of Montepulciano is stunning, with a wine history that runs back centuries and has been producing Nobile wines far longer than other regions such as Chianti or Montalcino. With historical greatness behind then, Vino Nobiles have not had the more recent success in the market as other more recognized Tuscan wine region. Because of the region's somewhat obscurity, they are now some of the greatest wine finds in Tuscany." – Lance Montalto, The Wine House

2016 Gracciano della Seta Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
93 Points Decanter
92 Points Wine Enthusiast
Release Price: $30
Wine House: $24.99

93 Points: "This historical 19th century estate has been in the della Seta Ferrari Corbelli family's hands since the mid-1900s and since the new generation took over in 2011, the quality continues to improve. As with the last couple of years, its Vino Nobile is a stand out for the vintage. Somewhat surprisingly, the 2016 demonstrates more power than the 2015 without compromising its signature elegance. There is a brightness and drinkability under its girth and the tannins are finessed. Gorgeous floral and spice notes are laced throughout.Drinking Window 2020 – 2030" – Michaela Morris, Decanter (February 2019)

92 Points: This fragrant red offers enticing scents of forest berry, iris, violet and a balsamic whiff of eucalyptus. Linear and elegant, the taut palate features raspberry, pomegranate, star anise and a white-pepper note alongside fine-grained tannins. It's vibrant and balanced, with an orange zest finish. Drink 2021–2028." – Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast (April 2020)

The Gracciano Estate is one of the oldest wineries in the Montepulciano region. In the beginning of the 19th century, Gracciano was owned by the Svetoni family who built the Villa and created the Italian-style gardens that surround it. With over 400 hectares and 22 farms, the very extensive Gracciano Estate also produced a wide variety of typical Tuscan products.

The property was inherited by the current owners, Marco, Vannozza and Galdina della Seta Ferrari Corbelli Greco, through their father Giorgio. Today, the winery covers roughly 70 hectares of which 20 are vineyards. The vines grow on the clay and silty soil of the Gracciano hills, one of the oldest and most prestigious crus of Montepulciano. Already in 1864 the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano produced by the then Svetoni winery (today Gracciano della Seta Estate) was awarded the first prize at the International Fair of Turin. The cellars of the Gracciano Villa still contain several bottles of wine from exceptional vintage years.

Giorgio della Seta, after working for many years abroad as a manager in a multinational company, decided to return to Tuscany and take up the family Estate. He proceeded to renew the vineyards and build, in 2013, a new winery alongside the traditional unit which is still used for ageing wine in wood.

The winery has always been run by renowned oenologists (such as Nicolò d’Afflitto from 1985 and Beppe Rigoli since 1995) who ensured that the Tenuta di Gracciano produced an excellent Vino Nobile, fully respecting the terroir and using autochthonous vines.

The vineyards of the Gracciano Estate, owned by the della Seta Ferrari Corbelli Greco family, cover about 20 ha. Gracciano is one of the historic crus of Montepulciano. The average altitude is 300-350 m.a.s.l and the soil is mainly silty and clay: clay is prevalent in some parts and sand in others. This area is particularly suitable for growing grape vines, especially of the varieties that are used in the Vino Nobile blend. The Prugnolo Gentile variety reveals its full potential through a slow and complete ageing process, helped by good ventilation, the fluctuation between day and night temperatures and excellent exposure. Late frosts and hail storms are rare in the area.

The vineyards are divided into 4 crus: Casale, Toraia, Maramai and Podere Rovisci. Each has its own characteristics which differ according to the type of soil upon which they grow.

Casale grows on the softest terrain and produces harmonious, elegant and aromatic wines. The vines were replanted in 2008 and the grapes are used for the production of Rosso di Montepulciano.

In 2015 the Estate turned to organic viticulture and use only copper and sulphur-based pesticides. In order to limit the production of the vines, no fertilizers have been used in the past 10 years and, when necessary, the ground is sown with leguminous or other herbaceous plants. Agronomic practices are used to balance the vines. As the area is windy, the plants stay healthy and there is little need to use pesticides. Average production per hectare is contained through summer pruning and the selective thinning of grapes. Grapes are still harvested by hand so that the best fruit is selected while still on the plant.
