What You Absolutely Need to Know About Wine
Tuesday, February 28

7 PM Start Time
$53

This class was previously named Absolute Beginning Wine Appreciation, but that title limited the participants to people who knew that didn't know the basics of wine. Truth be told, there is a lot of fundamental information about wine that most people have just skipped over in order to get to the drinking part! So whether an absolute beginner or hardened vet, this class will teach you something you didn't know or at least were not sure of in the complex, wonderful world of wine.

While based on the information offered in Absolute Beginners, this is a newly structured Power Point type of class presented along with nine great wines to illustrate the information. The most heard comments after this class are usually along the lines of "I've been drinking wine for 15 years, going tasting in Santa Barbara and Napa, etc, and I learned more about wine in the first 20 minutes of this class than I did in all that time!"

Join Tasting & Seminars Director JB Severin for an entertaining revelation.
Dinner with Domaine l'Arlot
With Géraldine Godot, Domaine de l'Arlot Technical Director
Wednesday, March 1

7:30 PM
Only $150 (all inclusive)
The Wine House and Upstairs 2 are hosting a very special four-course wine dinner with Domaine de l'Arlot Technical Director, Géraldine Godot. Two kilometres to the south of Nuits Saint Georges, the Domaine de l'Arlot is a telling example of a long-lasting old Côte de Nuits Burgundian property. Domaine de l'Arlot cultivates vines and make wines which express the terroir from which they come. This vision, which respects nature to reveal the truth of great terroirs, defines the philosophy of Domaine de l'Arlot. A special feature of this dinner is that we will be pairing each course with an older vintage and a current vintage of each wine, adding yet another dimension to this unique experience!

Clear your calendar for March 1st – this is a rare opportunity to sample such distinctive wines with the Technical Director from the Domaine, paired with a sumptuous 4-course meal for only $150!

This course is designed from the "Associazione Italiana Sommelier" (AIS, or Italian Sommelier Association) curricula, recognized as the leading educational and consulting authority on Italian wines. The teachers are all native Italians and professionally Certified Sommeliers by the WSA (Worldwide Sommelier Association). The AIS was founded in 1965 and is the foremost authority in wine education and sommelier services. This is the updated version of our previously titled Ultimate Beginners and Intermediates Class. While based on much of the information contained in that class, this is a redesigned Power Point type of class created for people who want to expand their appreciation and enjoyment of wine but who don't want to invest the time or money necessary for a certification. (For that, please see our WSET courses.) This four-part series is a fun, in-depth, consumer-friendly take on topics such as: how to taste and evaluate wine, the major types of wine and grapes of the world, food & wine pairing and much more. We will taste 8-10 wines per session that will illustrate the information presented as well as establish the benchmarks for all of your future wine consumption! If you've enjoyed JB's What You Absolutely Need to Know About Wine introductory course, this is the natural continuation!

Join Tasting & Seminars Director JB Severin for all the fun that you would expect to have learning about wine.
In-Store Tasting with Wells Guthrie of Copain Wines
Thursday, March 9

7:15 to 8:30 PM
Only $15
Wells Guthrie discovered early on that his taste in wine gravitated toward Europe in general and France's Rhône Valley in particular. So much so, he picked up and moved with his new bride to the region to learn from the best. For two years, Wells apprenticed for esteemed winemaker and living legend Michel Chapoutier in France's Rhone Valley. During that time, Wells was deeply inspired by the traditions and practices of French winemaking, not to mention the European attitude that wine is an essential part of life.

At Copain, he creates wines that are firmly rooted in California, yet with the sensibilities of the European wines that so moved him. He is as committed to crafting these elegant, nuanced wines as he is to building a legacy that will be passed down to his daughters in the great tradition of European winemakers whose estates have been in the same family for generations.

Wines being poured:
2016 Copain Rose "Tous Ensemble" Anderson Valley ($18)
2015 Copain Chardonnay "Tous Ensemble" Anderson Valley ($22)
2015 Copain Pinot Noir "Tous Ensemble" Anderson Valley ($27)
2014 Copain Syrah "Tous Ensemble" Anderson Valley ($22)
2014 Copain Pinot Noir "Les Voisins" Anderson Valley ($35)
2013 Copain Pinot Noir Wendling Vineyard Anderson Valley ($59)
2012 Copain Syrah Baker Ranch Vineyard Anderson Valley ($59)

Cheese and charcuterie will be served by Upstairs 2
Introduction Whisk(e)y
Friday, March 10

Class begins at 7:30 PM
$60
Join hosts Richard Merenbach and Marla Foust on a journey of discovery as we explore the where and how of the world of whisk(e)y. From briny whiskies of the cold, windswept Isles of Scotland to the flattering imitations of Asia and on to the unique, rich whiskies of Bourbon County and other American hotspots, we will explore all that these aged distillates have to offer and see what they teach us about each region's history and geography. Travel with us and decide if you prefer the soft kiss of an Irish Blend or the rough slap of a Highland Malt. And maybe we can even decide if the whisk(e)y you come to love should have an "e" or not.

Monday, March 13

The Wine House is delighted to partner with Dalla Terra (Italian Winery Direct Importer) to present a six-part educational series covering Italy’s most important wine regions – including well-known favorites as well as the most exciting up-and-coming areas. Participants will journey across Italy learning about historical events and outside influences, appellation breakdowns, native grape varieties, while tasting wines specific to the regions.
