93 Points: “The 2019 Juan Gil (silver label) was produced with Monastrell grapes from their own old, non-irrigated vines fermented in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels for around 12 months. It has 15% alcohol and a pH of 3.67, but somehow the wine does not come through as overripe; they eliminate all the raisins with their new optical sorting machine and that makes very clean wines and has increased the precision. They also reduced the toast of their barrels and that increases the integration of the oak with the fruit. Varietal, juicy, soft and very drinkable. Drink date 2022 – 2027.” – Luis Gutierrez, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (April 2022)

VINEYARDS The flagship wine, Juan Gil Silver Label, is made with certified organic Monastrell grapes from over 40-year-old vines. The chalky and rocky limestone soils, poor in nutrients, are ideal to grow the Monastrell varietal, and the vineyards are low yielding, about 1.04 tons/acre. The Gil family uses progressive winemaking techniques including laser optic sorters after grape harvest to ensure the best fruit is selected. The wine is then aged for 12 months in French oak before bottling. Always farmed organically.
About Bodegas Juan Gil The origins of Bodegas Juan Gil date from 1916 when Juan Gil Gimènez, great grandfather of the present generation, began getting involved in the world of wines and built a winery in the heart of Jumilla, Spain. His son, Juan Gil Guerrero, dedicated his
entire life to the wine business, however, it was the third generation who really consolidated the winery. Juan Gil Gonzalez, together with his brother Paco, the founder’s grandsons, forged an image of quality, reliability and efficiency. The present Gil generation continually strive to maintain and improve the Juan Gil standard, which is evident through the remarkable wines they produce.
Almost 300 acres surrounds the winery of Bodegas Juan Gil. The rest is scattered in small parcels. These parcels have been acquired from farmers next to the property, in the area called “Termino de Arriba”, a favored zone for the vine cultivation. The old, unirrigated vineyards are cultivated in quite an extreme climate. In favored areas of altitude, along with unique microclimates for soil, combined with a meticulous viticultural practices, all factor in positively influencing the final yield and level of maturation of the vines. The heterogeneity of the soils offers
a great diversity of characteristics to the grapes from the different plots. Grapes are vinified separately and then assembled, obtaining wines with a wide range of nuances and organoleptic properties, resulting in very unique and distinctive wines.
