WASHINGTON CAB BLEND FROM POWERHOUSE VINEYARD

"Cab connoisseurs know that Washington Cabernets and Bordeaux blends hold their own when compared to Napa or Bordeaux – but without the stratospheric prices! Jeb Dunnuck writes, ‘Readers looking for classic, age-worthy Bordeaux blends that will stand up with the best out there need to give the wines of Andrew Will a serious look. These are classic, balanced wines.’ Today we have the flagship wine that's 80% Cabernet Sauvignon from the talented team at Andrew Will, the 99 point 2019 Andrew Will Winery Sorella Horse Heaven Hills. The wine comes from the legendary Champoux Vineyard, a source vineyard for another well-known Washington winery’s 100 point wines. Anthony Mueller of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate describes the 2019 Sorella as ‘impeccably balanced… a stunningly beautiful wine’ and advises readers to ‘Buy this ASAP!’ Well, here’s your chance – don’t miss out!

99 Points: "Flirting with triple digits, and perhaps the best Sorella yet, the 2019 Sorella explodes from the glass with a fantastic mineral essence that sways between dark red fruit tones, oak essence and freshly opened flowers. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is impeccably balanced with a silky-smooth mid-palate that bestows a stunningly beautiful wine with gobs of complexity and a ripe frame of glossy black raspberry and blackberry fruit tones. Unwinding across the finish, the wine unpacks gorgeous layers that seduce me for a second, third and fourth sip and finally begs me to finish the glass. Buy this ASAP! Drink Date: 2025 - 2045" – Anthony Mueller, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (October 2022)

97 Points: "The flagship from this talented team is the 2019 Sorella, which is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% each of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, all from the Champoux Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. Deep purple-hued, with a great nose of cassis, blackcurrants, tobacco leaf and lead pencil, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, silky, polished tannins, and terrific overall balance. It shows the pure, elegant, seamless style of the vintage and will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and evolve nicely for at least two decades. This is pure class. Maturity: 2025 – 2046" – Jeb Dunnuck (July 2022)

95 Points: "The 2019 Sorella is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petite Verdot. It's dark and brooding in the glass, displaying a burst of ashen stone and grilled herbs that gives way to black currant and exotic spice. Round and supple on the palate, this shows cooling acidity and a great depth of rich red and black fruits, contrasted by a saline mineral tinge. It tapers off with a peppery edge and a violet pastille flourish, leaving silty tannins and hints of licorice while finishing with outstanding length. The 2019 is still youthful and tense, yet it promises over a decade of positive evolution. Drinking Window: 2026 – 2038" – Eric Guido, Vinous (October 2023)

FROM THE WINERY

Sorella means sister in Italian and was named after Chris Camarda late sister Jane Camarda. This first vintage was from 1994. This wine is made from 100% Champoux Vineyard fruit and represents the nature of the vineyard by highlighting the Cabernet Sauvignon, which is considered some of the best in Washington State. The picture on the label is a portrait of Annie Camarda (Chris’s late wife).

The 2019 Vintage was a relatively even growing season which started slightly later than normal. The summer months were marginally cooler than the past few vintages which carried on into early fall. One of the markers for the vintage will be the consecutive cold snaps in October, forcing us to make quick picking decisions to avoid frost damage. In the end we did not see any frost damage or issues with our fruit and ended up with a truly great vintage!
