ORNELLAIA: AN ITALIAN ICON

"Tenuta dell’ Ornellaia and the release of their epic 2017 bottling needs very little introduction since Ornellaia ranks up there at the pinnacle of the Bolgheri Bordeaux-blend wines along with Sassicaia. Ornellaia is known for its opulence and sensuality – a spectacular wine that has the freshness and balance needed to age gracefully. I had the pleasure of meeting with Axel Hines, the estate director of Ornellaia two years ago and when talking with him about his 2017s, he was thrilled with the vintage but noted while all vintages represent their terroir, some are more driven by winemaker experience. This is the wine that shows Olga’s brilliance. For their 32nd anniversary, they outdid themselves, Ornellaia created a stunning wine.

Antonio Galloni of Vinous describes the 97 point 2017 Ornellaia as ‘stunning’ and ‘superb!’ It earns his highest score for the vintage with its ‘captivating interplay of richness and energy. Picking early was the key… The 2017 is sumptuous and racy, as Ornellaias from warmer years tends to be, but it is not at all heavy or overdone.’ This is one of the finest bottles ever of Ornellaia. Collectors note: each 6-pack contains one ‘artist label’ bottle – the only way to guarantee getting this bottle is to purchase the 6-pack." – Lance Montalto, The Wine House

Release Price: $245
Wine House: $209.99

97 Points: "A stunning wine, the 2017 Ornellaia offers a captivating interplay of richness and energy. Picking early was the key. Young vine Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc were harvested in August for the first time ever. In the glass, the 2017 offers up an enticing mélange of mocha, cedar, tobacco and licorice, with soft curves that add to its sensuality and allure. The 2017 is sumptuous and racy, as Ornellaias from warmer years tend to be, but it is not at all heavy or overdone. In a word: superb! Drinking window: 2025 – 2042." – Antonio Galloni, Vinous (March 2020)

95 – 96 Points: "A solid and powerful young red with a linear line of tannins and fruit running through it. Very serious. Tannic and focused." – James Suckling (September 2018)

For the 12th edition of Ornellaia Vendemmia d’Artista Tomás Saraceno invites us to reflect on the impact of our actions on the planet as he interprets the character "Solare" (radiant) of Ornellaia 2017. The artist has created a site-specific masterpiece for the Estate, customized a limited series of 111 large format bottles, and designed a special label that, a single example of which, will be found in each Ornellaia case containing 6 bottles of 750 ml.

FROM ORNELLAIA

WINEMAKER'S TASTING NOTES

"Ornellaia 2017 masterfully interprets what was a particularly warm and sunny year. The intense and dark colour heralds a wine of beautiful concentration; the nose, rich and complex, releases scents of ripe red fruits, accompanied by notes of sweet tobacco and vanilla. The taste reveals an Ornellaia of great balance, a combination of firmness and pleasant freshness." Olga Fusari, Winemaker, July 2019

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Description
2017 will go down in history as being one of the hottest, driest years ever. Things were clear from the outset due to a particularly mild winter, with temperatures over three degrees higher than the seasonal average and rains within the norm. Consequently, the vines budded much sooner than usual, almost two weeks in advance. The vegetative cycle was accompanied by hot weather with very little rain from the month of March, and this was interrupted by a sudden drop in temperatures at the end of April, which caused frost in various parts of Tuscany. Thanks to the mitigating effects of the sea, temperatures remained above zero along the coast, preventing damage to the young buds. The hot, dry weather returned in May, limiting vegetative development and the size of the bunches, while flowering occurred under excellent conditions. There was virtually no rain in July and August but fortunately the hot weather was offset by cooler temperatures at night. The harvest began early, with the first Merlot on the 24th of August, continuing through until the last week of September in hot weather and under sunny skies. Rain finally put in an appearance around the middle of month, cooling things down and creating the perfect conditions for the later-ripening varieties.
