A PAIR OF BEAUTIFUL BAROLOS

“In all my years working as an Italian wine specialist, the overwhelming response to the 2016 vintage is something I have never seen before for Barolo. But it is a response that is well warranted! Our 2016 Barolo campaign has been monumental due to the spectacular vintage, combined with reasonable pricing. I'm focusing here on the two best Barolo buys of the vintage, the 95 Point 2016 Paolo Scavino Barolo and the 98 Point Scavino Bric del Fiasc.

We promoted 2016 Paolo Scavino Barolos earlier this year and sold out. This is our second and final drop and with the holidays upon us, we expect these to sell even quicker. If you are interested in magnums or half-bottles from this extraordinary vintage and producer, check out ALL of our 2016 Paolo Scavino Barolos! In terms of quality for the price, there is no other Barolo that can compete.

I was in Piedmont twice last year, tasting these vintage of a lifetime Barolos, and in all my years as the Italian buyer and Italian wine lover, I have never been more captivated with a vintage. These are among the greatest Nebbiolos ever. We also have many other beautiful examples of high scoring yet reasonably priced wines from this epic 2016 Barolo vintage – all ‘last call’ – don’t miss out!

Please stay healthy and drink well.” – Lance Montalto, Wine House

2016 Paolo Scavino Barolo
95 Points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
95 Points Wine Enthusiast
Release Price: $50
Wine House: $45.99

95 Points: “Showing Enrico Scavino's signature at the bottom of the label, this is a classic expression of Barolo. The Paolo Scavino 2016 Barolo offers impeccable balance and an all-pleasing approach. There is something for everyone, especially die-hard Nebbiolo lovers, with energy, power, aromatic finesse and elegant tannins. Fruit for this wine is sourced from a half-dozen vineyard sites from across the appellation, so you get some of the power of Serralunga d'Alba and the precision of Castiglione Falletto. The scope of this wine is wide and broad, offering sweeping panoramic views of this unique grape from Piedmont. This is a terrific value. Drink dates 2023 to 2040.” – Monica Larner, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (July 2020)

95 Points: “Fragrant blue flower and perfumed berry aromas mingle with whiffs of dark culinary spice and forest floor. Tightly knit and loaded with finesse, the full-bodied palate features juicy cherry, strawberry compote, star anise and a hint of white pepper alongside taut, polished tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2022–2030.” – Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast (October 2020)

The Wine
This Barolo has a special value for our family and represents the history and tradition of blending different cru of Barolo.

Our Barolo comes from the best plots of seven cru. The diversity of soils, exposure and altitude characterizes each of these small but very important terroir. Unifying these diversities, the Barolo offers harmony and complexity with an overall character of the zone.

Separate vinfication. Destemming and light crushing. The maceration and the alcoholic fermentation are in stainless steel with temperature controlled and indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation in oak barrels. The tartaric stabilization occurs naturally during the winter with the low temperatures.

Every plots of the crus is kept separate and aged in neutral French oak barrels for 10 months and further 12months in large casks. Final blend as a result of a further selection in the cellar of the most performing plots of the vintage. Approximately one year of stainless steel and 10 months of bottle aging before release.

2016 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc
98 Points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
98 Points Wine Enthusiast
96 Points Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Release Price: $107
Wine House: $94.99

98 Points: “Drawing its fruit from Castiglione Falletto, the Paolo Scavino 2016 Barolo Bric dël Fiasc shows dimension, depth, precision and power. The wine opens to a dark garnet color with a saturated hue, leading to a full, all-encompassing bouquet. The Barolo Bric dël Fiasc is often the most representative wine in the Scavino portfolio, and never has this been more true than in this classic vintage. Dark fruit, licorice, spice and ferrous earth build a fluid and multifaceted bouquet. The mouthfeel sits firm and tight on the palate today, promising to evolve and soften tomorrow. This is a bottle for your cellar. Drink dates 2024 to 2050.” – Monica Larner, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (July 2020)

98 Points: “What a gorgeous showing. It opens with heady aromas of menthol, forest berry, iris and new leather while the enveloping, full-bodied palate delivers raspberry compote, ripe Marasca cherry, licorice and baking spice before a minty finish. Enveloping, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity provide perfect balance. Thanks to the ripe, juicy fruit, you'd never guess this had an abv of 15%. Drink 2023–2036.” – Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast (October 2020)

96 Points: The 2016 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is a powerful, muscular wine. Youthfully austere and tannic, the 2016 is going to need a number of years to come around, but it is magnificent, even in the early going. Layers of building tannins enshroud a core of dark Nebbiolo fruit, with hints of dried herbs, iron, leather and sweet tobacco that develop with a bit of coaxing. As always, Bric del Fiasc has a feral intensity to it. The 2016 is an especially fine edition and also a terrific example of the style of this Castiglione Falletto site. Drinking window 2023 to 2041.” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous (February 2020)

The Wine
Here the Nebbiolo grapes were always the best: consequently in 1978 Enrico convinced his father Paolo to vinify these grapes separately and show for the first time the potential of this site. One of the first grand cru to be made as single vineyard Barolo. Image and identity of Paolo Scavino winery.

In the Fiasco vineyard the Tortonian and Helvetian soils cross each other combining a great finesse and power. Classy and classic expression of Nebbiolo which requires time to develop all its complexity is Bric dël Fiasc®. The texture characterizes this Barolo: earthy imprint, density of fruit, vibrant and refined tannins. The acidity supports the important structure of this Barolo and lifts the nose which is complex, mineral, balsamic. Little red fruits and licorice are typical notes in Bric dël Fiasc®
