BIG BEAUTIFUL BUDGET-FRIENDLY BAROSSA

If ever there was a wine to purchase by the case to have on hand for backyard barbecues, unexpected guests, or just casual weeknight imbibing it's this 96 point 2021 Torbreck Vintners Woodcutter’s Shiraz Barossa Valley. This big, beautiful Barossa Shiraz is full of juicy red and purple berries, crisp food-friendly acidity, and very fine tannins, all in an easy-to-open screwcap bottle! The winemaker says the signature note of this vintage is 'high aromatic lift with exceptional balance.' The wine exhibits a lot of succulence, richness, texture and complexity for a Shiraz priced under $25!

Torbreck has long been a standout in the realm of serious Shiraz. The Woodcutter’s is 'ever the reliable wine in the Torbreck lineup,' says Erin Larkin of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, and the 2021 Woodcutter's is an excellent introduction to this producer's serious Shiraz. But James Suckling says it best, awarding this wine a well-deserved 96 points: 'Lovely ripened blackberries and raspberries. Al dente. Full-bodied yet so refined and focused with crisp acidity and ultra-fine, creamy tannins. Succulent and crunchy but focused and structured. Bright and purposeful.'

Best of all, Woodcutter's Shiraz is a steal – a budget-conscious wine to buy in multiples. It's
excellent now, and it will age gracefully for years to come! Glen Knight, The Wine House

96 Points: “Lovely ripened blackberries and raspberries. Al dente. Full-bodied yet so refined and focused with crisp acidity and ultra-fine, creamy tannins. Succulent and crunchy but focused and structured. Bright and purposeful. Drink after 2024 but already hard to hold back. Screw cap.” – James Suckling (October 2022)

91 Points: “Ever the reliable wine in the Torbreck lineup (challenged only by the beauty of the Steading, but nevertheless), the Woodcutters has tightened up over time. My first introduction to it almost 10 years ago recalls a plush, full-bodied wine that delivered all the Barossa feels and flavors that one could possibly hope for. These days, and today specifically, the 2021 Woodcutter's Shiraz is tight and tense, with black brooding fruit set to a rigging of firm, savory tannins. The oak is subliminal in this wine, leaving only the tannins to shape the fruit. Really handled well. Impressive.” – Erin Larkin, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (September 2022)

FROM THE WINERY

This wine reflects the up and coming Shiraz vineyards of the Barossa, rather than the battle hardened old vines that make up the core of our other cuvee’s. But like all Torbreck wines, Woodcutter’s - Shiraz receives the very best viticultural and winemaking treatment. Although this wine is constantly praised for its succulence and richness, there is also a complexity and texture which is rarely found at this price.

2021 VINTAGE
The 2021 summer growing season was mild, with even and cool daily temperatures throughout. Enhanced by good rains provided during the winter and spring of 2020, our vineyards grew wonderful canopies and developed well-formed grape bunches. As a result of this long flavour development cycle in the vineyard, 2021’s signature is wines of high aromatic lift with densely coloured tints and exceptional balance.

TASTING
Lifted red, black and blue fruits of red cherry, raspberry coulis, blueberry conserve and wild blackberry and blackcurrant. There is a spicy edge showing cardamom, star anise and Chinese five spice.

Soft caressing tannins and voluptuous mouthfeel from plump Shiraz berries gives this wine a posture that belies its pedigree. The poise and piquancy of the fruit sitting on top of the structured mouthfeel provides confidence to cellar for 5-10 years. Serve at 16C and match with most cuisines.
