BEST-VALUE SOUTH AFRICAN CABERNET SAUVIGNON

We are constantly on the lookout for quality, budget-friendly Cabernet Sauvignon and increasingly the best place to look is the Southern Hemisphere. A few of the cabs from Stellenbosch, South Africa, are some of the best values in the world. Today’s offering, the 93 point 2018 Glenelly The Glass Collection Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch has an amazing pedigree, coming from the estate owned by May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, longtime owner of legendary Pauillac Second Growth Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Bordeaux. In 2003, after visiting many vineyards, she purchased the Glenelly Estate on her first visit to Stellenbosch, saying that she knew it was where she wanted to fulfill her 20-year dream of starting a top-quality New World wine estate outside of France. She felt South Africa had the right soils and microclimates to do that. The Glenelly vineyards are ideally situated between two hills, with prevailing breezes that make them cooler than many in the Stellenbosch district. At just $12.99, this cabernet 'over-delivers big-time' says Christian Eedes of Decanter. I’m not saying this cab will change your life, but it will most certainly change your Wednesday night, so stock up!” – Garrin Hajeian, The Wine House

We have a very limited quantity of Glenelly's flagship wine, the 2015 Glenelly ‘Lady May’ Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch. It's a big step up in quality, so at $48.99 it's also an insane deal!

The Glass Collection
Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch
93 Points Decanter
91 Points Tim Atkin, MW
90 Points Wine Enthusiast
$12.99
93 Points: May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, formerly of Pauillac Château Pichon Comtesse, acquired this property in 2003, convinced it could produce high-quality wines – her focus largely on Bordeaux varieties. Glass Collection is the second label and over-delivers big-time for the price. A very pretty nose of florals, dried herbs and red and black berries. The palate is elegant and understated with pure fruit and fine tannins. Drinking Window 2020 – 2027.” – Christian Eedes, Decanter (May 2020)

91 Points: You’d expect a winery created by a former second growth Bordeaux chateau owner to be good at making Cabernet Sauvignon, even at this comparatively inexpensive price, and you’d be right. Fresh, elegant and perfumed, with cassis and lead pencil notes, graceful tannins and stylish 15% new wood. 2022-2026Tim Atkin, MW (September 2020)

90 Points: “There’s a lovely herbal character upfront on the nose of this wine, expressed in waves of black currant leaf, fresh cigar tobacco and licorice root. That earthy impression is supported by ample tones of cassis, blackberry and plum at the core. The palate is medium in weight but defined in structure, with moderately gripping tannins and a lengthy, fruit skin-fueled finish.” – Lauren Buzzeo, Wine Enthusiast (March 2022)

FROM THE IMPORTER

In 2003, at the youthful age of 78, May-Elaine de Lenquesaing bought a property on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain and begin renovating the property of what was to become Glenelly Estate. What makes this story so compelling is that she was the previous owner of one of Bordeaux’s great wines estates, Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. Almost two decades later and the end results have been impressive and her vision has started to manifest itself beautifully. One of the better ways to get a feel for what an estate can offer is through its entry level wines. In this case the Glass Collection series, particularly with the Glass Collection Cabernet Sauvignon, is a phenomenal effort. The just released 2018 Glenelly Glass Collection Cabernet Sauvignon is another great example of why Stellenbosch is now recognized as one of the best places on the planet for producing Cabernet and more importantly, also some of the best valued Cabernet in the world.
