“I'm thrilled to highlight two personal Brunello favorites: the 97 point 2015 Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino (only $69.99) and the 98 point 2015 Ciacci Brunello di Montalcino (only $59.99)

When I took over the Italian buying for the Wine House over 20 years ago, Brunello was just making its first really significant push into the market. I will never forget tasting the 1995 Uccelliera and Ciacci Brunellos and how their wines made such a massive impact on how I viewed (and still view) Brunello di Montalcino. The wines were not showy but were wonderfully complex, structured and yet underrated. Andrea Cortonesi, owner and winemaker of Uccelliera, still produces some of the finest Brunello but he now gets every bit of recognition he deserves. His 2015 is a personal favorite.

Ciacci Piccolomini, one of the most sought-after producers in all of Italy, have outdone themselves in terms of quality and price points with their 2015 Brunellos! This ancient estate emphasizes finesse and balance, with layers of ultrafine tannins and subtle ripe fruit, and they age incredibly well.

95 Points: “The Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona estate enjoys a beautiful and huge expanse of vineyards at the back of the Castelnuovo dell'Abate village, where the downward slope of the hamlet meets the Orcia River, which delineates the appellation border. The estate's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino offers lovely harmony and elegance. The wine's taste profile follows the soft contours and beautiful horizons that characterize this beautiful part of Tuscany. The mouthfeel is medium-weight but carefully balanced with just enough acidity to add brightness. It shows just enough backbone to guarantee staying power and longevity. That said, the tannins are carefully integrated into the delicate fiber of the wine. 97 Points: “Andrea Cortonesi of Uccelliera shows real talent when it comes to highlighting vintage variation in his wines. His 2015 Brunello di Montalcino captures the exuberance and the ebullience of this sunny and warm growing season. However, the wine remains orderly, precise and very elegant nonetheless, with a pretty succession of aromas that play cautiously forward, building in intensity along the way. Dried currant and cherry cede to moist earth, rose petal and balsam herb. The wine's medium-weight body is supported by fresh acidity and well-managed tannins (with 36 months of oak aging). 96 Points: “The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino opens with an alluring bouquet that showcases dark red fruits, sweet florals, dusty earth and a hint of animal musk. On the palate, I find a soft, enveloping expression, displaying ripe red and black fruits, which seem to hover on the senses, as a mix of spices, saline-minerals and zesty acids saturate the senses. The finish is long, spicy, yet also wonderfully fresh, with hints of fine tannin gently tugging at the senses. The 2015 Uccelliera Brunello is already so easy to like, making good use of the sunny nature of the vintage, yet with all the raw ingredients for medium-term cellaring. 95 Points: “Plenty of earth, tar, spices, dried cherries and red plums here. The tannins have a firm but generous quality to them, providing an abundance of structure to the full-bodied palate. 3) Pull up in front of the store. There is no need to call when you arrive at the store – just roll down your passenger window and let us know the name on the order(s).
