SPANISH SUMMER SIPPER

"Two co-workers and I tasted this Bodega's wines and were so impressed... we were truly blown away! The only problem was that there was no importer for these stunning wines. So we asked one of our favorite importers to take a look and asked him to add theses wines to his portfolio. He did, and the rest is history. The 2019 Oxer Bastegieta Marko Txakoli is completely brand new to the US market and we couldn't be more excited about it!

Oxer Bastegieta is a relative newcomer to the region of Rioja but his family have owned a restaurant and winery in the Bizkaiko Txakolina appellation (Basque Country) for some time. It was his father who asked him to make a Txakoli for the family restaurant, which later inspired him to get a degree in Wine Growing and Oenology in Laguardia, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa. The 2019 Oxer Bastegieta Marko Txakoli is a beautiful white wine that has fantastic flavors of lime, pear and green apples with a mouthwatering touch of salinity on the finish. The interesting label features the rock paintings found in the nearby Santimamiñe Caves. If you have been lucky enough to enjoy a vacation in Spain you may have tried Txakoli and already fallen in love with it, if not this is a great opportunity to experience what may be your new favorite white wine. Cheers!" – Jim Knight, The Wine House

2019 Oxer Bastegieta Marko Txakoli
91 Points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Release Price: $29
Wine House: $21.99

91 Points: "Bastegieta talks about 2019 as a textbook vintage with perfect weather conditions to produce wines with more structure but more vertical than in 2018, as showcased by the 2019 Marko, from grapes picked later than they are picked for traditional Txakoli. It's a complex blend of 55% Hondarribi Zuri Zerratia (Petit Courbu), 40% Hondarribi Zuri (Gros Courbu) and 5% Izkiriota Handia (Gros Manseng) from the village of Kortezubi close to the coast where the soils are rich in limestone with perhaps a little slate/schist. This comes from four hectares of vines, and it fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and then matured with the lees for four to five months. I cannot say this is fruit-driven, which makes sense with his approach to show the soils in the wines. It has a balsamic and leesy touch and stony minerality that is better perceived in the austere texture. Drink date 2020 – 2023" – Luis Gutierrez, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (August 2020)

FROM THE WINERY

MARKO 2019
DO Bizkaiko Txakolina

Varieties: 55% Hondarribi Zuri Zerratia (Petit Courbu), 40% Hondarribi Zuri (Gros Courbu) and 5% Izkiota Handia (Gros Manseng).

MARKO was created to show the potential of the region´s grapes when picked later and vinified as a still wine. The outcome is a more mature and serious style Txakoli.

Vineyards
The vineyards are located in the village of Kortezubi, a little old town in Bizkaia, famous for its prehistoric caves which form a Unesco World Heritage Site. The vineyard has a shallow, slightly acidic clay-loam textured topsoil with limestone subsoil.

Winemaking
The alcoholic fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks, using autochthonous yeasts. The wine then spends four months in contact with the lees using bâtonnage which gives it extra character.

Character
A very fresh wine dominated by fresh citrus and green fruit (lime, green apple, pear) and a defined herbal touch (bay leaf). The wines shows a mouthfilling softness caused by the time spent on its lees, and has a salty finish.

What's in a name
The Basque have great respect for nature and also for the houses they live in. They even give them names. Marko is the name of Oxer's family house, which is surrounded by the winery’s vineyards.
