SPEND SOME TIME WITH A SUPER CAMPANIAN!

Montevetrano has long been one of the modern highlight wines from Campania and these two 98 point examples illustrate why perfectly. There are a few wines I personally call ‘Super-Campanians’ that I purchase, and Montevetrano is the benchmark. This is a ‘must-have’ wine, and this is last call for the 2015 and 2016 vintages.

A while back, I sat with Guido Groppi from Montevetrano for a rare guided vertical tasting of six Montevetrano vintages – from 2007 to 2016. Tasting so many vintages and going back over a decade demonstrated how wonderfully well these wines drink young and how their beauty develops with age. The 2015 and 2016 showed amazingly well that day, and tasting the older vintages made it clear that this wine will age out spectacularly in a cellar. We have a few 2015 magnums which are terrific for a special occasion.

This is also the lowest price we have seen on Montevetrano for a few years. I didn’t ask why, I just loaded up, as you should too. We are getting to the end of these vintages, so when they're gone, they're gone...”

2015 Montevetrano Colli di Salerno Rosso
98 Points James Suckling
94 Points Vinous
Release Price: $80
750ml: $67.99 (40 bottles)
Magnum: $125.99 (9 bottles)

98 Points: “I love the polish and complexity to this red. It delivers subtle currant, dried herb and spice character as well as a full body that is tight and focused. Such polished tannins. It goes on for minutes. One of the best vintages in years!” – James Suckling (October 2017)

94 Points: “Deep purple-ruby. Rich aromas of dark plum, black currant, cedar, graphite and minerals on the captivating nose. Then clean, fresh and juicy, offering flavors similar to the aromas and an extremely refined mouthfeel. Licorice and violet elements feature on the long, graceful, multilayered finish. Very promising young Montevetrano. Drinking window 2021 – 2031” – Ian D’Agata, Vinous (November 2018)

2016 Montevetrano Colli di Salerno Rosso
98 Points James Suckling
95 Points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Release Price: $80
Wine House: $68.99
23 bottles available
98 Points: "Stunningly fresh nose of blackcurrants, blackberries and elderberries with myriad spice and herbal nuances. Breathtakingly fine tannins and great freshness packed into a sleek frame, the wine gliding over the palate gracefully as it heads out towards eternity. Delicious now, but with enormous aging potential." – James Suckling (December 2018)

95 Points: “The 2016 Montevetrano hits it out of the ballpark with beautiful intensity and lush richness that feels seamless and balanced. This is a celebrated blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Aglianico and 20% Merlot that delivers impressive characteristics that can be traced to each one of those grapes. You get the structure and the cherry-infused softness of the two French grapes with the dark fruit and the flinty crushed stone and spice of the native Aglianico grape. The vines are 20 years old on average and are planted in rich soils with plenty of rocky material. This wine is submitted to a careful 14 months in French barrique. Drink dates 2019 – 2035.” – Monica Larner, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (October 2019)
