SERIOUS SAUVIGNON BLANC

“Rafael Tirado has made wine all over the world and has become one of the most sought after wine consultants in Chile. The 95 point 2018 Laberinto Sauvignon Blanc is absolutely stunning... Luis Gutierrez of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate calls it 'amazing' and thinks it is 'one of the best Sauvignon Blancs ever produced in Chile.' This is a tour de force, not some banal Sauvignon Blanc. The first day of spring was yesterday and, though with the rain, it didn’t really feel like it, the rain has been a blessing for our dry state. The rain has also brought us beautiful rainbows and sunsets, perfect to enjoy a great glass of wine with. Enjoy this white throughout the spring and summer, because it will just get better with age.” – Glen Knight, The Wine House

2018 Laberinto Sauvignon Blanc Cenizas de Laberinto Maule Valley
95 Points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
93 Points Decanter
Release Price: $21
Wine House: $17.99
95 Points: “The amazing 2018 Cenizas de Laberinto Sauvignon Blanc has to be one of the finest vintages for this wine and one of the best Sauvignon Blancs ever produced in Chile. The vines are planted on volcanic soils on the Andes side of Maule, where the days are cool and the nights very cold. 2018 was a cooler year, with very low yields of small bunches, and all of that accentuates the acidity and sharp minerality of the wine, which has insane parameters—12.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.05 and nine grams of acidity! Of course, the wine didn't go through malolactic and was kept with the lees for six months. This has a style in the line of the 2011, 2013 and 2016—all cold years—but in a more complete style, keeping the freshness but giving it a broader palate. It has strong herbal aromas and flavors (nettle tea?) and sharp acidity, very sharp indeed, in a slightly wild style. This should age forever.” – Luis Gutierrez, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (February 2020)

93 Points: “This very special, secluded corner of Maule makes a very particular style of Sauvignon Blanc. It’s flinty and invigorating, all bristling acidity and pure, crystalline flavors and nuances. It’s like walking through a silent pine forest after rain. Electric, and thrilling. Benefits from age, too. Drinking Window 2020 – 2028.” – Peter Richards MW, Decanter (June 2019)

FROM THE WINERY

This hand-harvested, single vineyard, 100% estate Sauvignon Blanc is from vines that Rafael Tirado planted himself in 1998. This SB has a bright nose with Guava, passion fruit, and lemon leading to a mineral mid-palate and soft undertones of crushed rock. The volcanic ash from the vineyard adds to this minerality and sustained finish. The Sauvignon Blanc is fermented in 100% stainless steel which leads to a very juicy and refreshing wine.

ABOUT LABERINTO

As one of ten children, Rafael Tirado has long been prepared to navigate his way through life. Over the course of his decades-long career, he has made wine around the world, managed several mid-sized Chilean wineries, many of which are exported to the USA, and has become one of the most sought after wine consultants in Chile. Rafa purchased land in the Eastern Maule Valley in the front range of the Chilean Andes and planted his first estate vines in 1993 on volcanic ash over granite. He currently has six parcels totaling 23ha of vines. His vineyards are legally recognized to be located within the Colbun D.O. and he is currently the only producer in the D.O. Many of his vines are planted in various orientations, some of which are planted in the shape of a labyrinth. Rafael built a small gravity-fed winery and geothermal barrel and bottle room on the property, and currently produces estate wines under the Laberinto and Vistalago labels. We believe these wines to be some of the most classic expressions of terroir in all of Chile, and Rafael Tirado to be a beacon of Artisanal Chilean Wine.
