BEST OF BOTH WORLDS BRUNELLO

"Yes, I dodged a bullet and got out of Italy just over three weeks ago. The reason I was there was to taste at Benvenuto Brunello, Montacino's premier event to celebrate the release of the latest Brunello and Brunello Riserva vintages. I sampled over one hundred 2015 Brunellos, arguably some of the finest wines Italy has ever produced. I'm highlighting two wines that are special because, as with many producers, they are the best each of the two estates have ever made.

We are going low and high, in terms of price. The 2015 Castiglion del Bosco, is a super star both for affordable price (under $48) and top caliber (97 points). Since 2003, the winery has been owned by Massimo Ferragamo, Chairman of Salvatore Ferragamo USA, and as with all things Ferragamo, the emphasis is on quality. The 2015 Castiglion del Bosco is one of the best buys of the vintage.

We also have the stupendous 100 point 2015 Renieri Brunello di Montalcino. There were twelve 100-point wines so far for this epic vintage and this is the tenth wine we have been able to procure. This also was a highlight wine of the 2015 Brunello tasting. This is a far more elegant and subtle Brunello compared to a wine like Casanova di Neri, which runs more to the Bordeaux side of Sangiovese. We only have 48 bottles on futures, and they are due to arrive in the fall of this year." – Lance Montalto, The Wine House

2015 Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino (Pre-Arrival, ETA May 2020)
97 Points James Suckling
Wine House $47.99
97 Points: "Wonderful aromas of flowers, plums, terracotta and white pepper. Intense, yet ever so subtle. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a long and intense finish. Shows excellent length. Drink after 2021." – James Suckling (November 2019)

FROM THE WINERY

Our Brunello di Montalcino originates from Capanna vineyard, located in the north-west area of Montalcino. The peculiar characteristics of this vineyard, such as the natural isolation along with the altitude and the type of soil, which shows presence of clay shale and marl (Galestro rock), give to this prestigious wine a refined elegance as well as great personality.

The 2015 vintage
The 2015 harvest, was a textbook vintage in terms of the climate and the exceptional quality of the grapes. July and August were hot and dry, and the soil’s water reserves, which accumulated in the spring, helped to counteract the heat, leading to a superb vintage, which benefited from day-night temperature swings in September, hence the perfect ripening of the berries. The coolness of the weeks in the run-up to the harvest resulted in the perfect concentration of the aromas and ideal tannic maturation. The hand-picked grapes were healthy and integral, boasting small bunches and sparse berries, while the sugar content and acidity were exceptional.

The harvesting of grapes to make Brunello di Montalcino began on 19 September, earlier than previous years. The variety of soils and altitude of the vineyards enabled an excellent blending of the grapes vaunting different qualities.

Complexity, superb structure, and an inviting, mouth-filling palate are the hallmarks of this Sangiovese grown in the 42-hectare Capanna vineyard facing towards the Mediterranean sea. A garnet-flecked ruby red, it releases generous, emphatic fragrances classic to Sangiovese, developing a near-endless progression notable for its beautiful balance.

2015 Renieri Brunello di Montalcino (Pre-Arrival, ETA Oct 2020)
100 Points James Suckling
Wine House $125
48 bottles available

100 Points: "Earthy aromas of bark, sand, truffles, graphite, rust, terracotta and sandalwood rise up from the deep with Burgundian poise; fruitier orange zest and preserved lemons glimmer in their wake, while riper incense and tar lurk in this dense forest of aromas. Physics itself gives way as the line between reduction and oxidation is blurred. There’s such richness to the center palate, but the fruit there is vivacious and elegant, swaddled in robust but generous tannins that breach the outermost reaches of the mouth. The finish is hauntingly long, the after effects of the acidity unworldly. This is certainly in a quiet, reserved stage of evolution, and will need time to fully mature in bottle. Drink in 2025." – James Suckling (March 2020)
