A “KNOCKOUT” ROSSO!

I was in Montalcino in late February, at Benvenuto Brunello, and tasted over 100 different 2015 Brunellos and almost as many Rosso di Montalcinos. The 2018 vintage in Tuscany was a bit difficult, so good producers in a tougher vintage often blend down some of their Brunello into their Rosso di Montalcino. The silver lining is that then they produce some of their best Rossos ever.

We just received the new 2018 Rosso release from one of Montalcino’s most celebrated wineries, Caparzo. The brilliant 93 point 2018 Caparzo Rosso di Montalcino is under $19, and truly deserves the 'baby Brunello' nickname because it absolutely delivers like a young Brunello. It's 100% Sangiovese, is delicious juice, and is the best Rosso di Montalcino for the money in the market.
When I was in Montalcino, I met with Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini, considered the First Lady of Brunello, and her daughter, Alessandra, and tasted all of their wines. And, yes, while the 2015 Brunellos were standouts, this 2018 Caparzo Rosso di Montalcino was a showstopper and I ordered a pallet on the spot. The wine has just arrived and the Wine House is exclusive in California at the best price we have ever seen!” – Lance Montalto, The Wine House

Release Price: $24
Wine House: $18.99
Exclusive in CA!
93 Points: “Lively red color. Exceptionally perfumed nose reminds of red fruits, menthol, coffee and fresh herbs. Dense and fresh with flavors closely echoing the aromas. Boasts outstanding acid-fruit-tannin balance and a silky-sweet mouthfeel; I tasted two different bottles just to be sure, and based at least on what I tasted, this Rosso is a real knockout, in fact one of the very best from the 2018 vintage.” – Ian D’Agata, Vinous (April 2020)

FROM THE WINERY

The microclimates of the different zones allow us to obtain consistent quality from vintage to vintage. A worthy alternative for the discerning consumer, Rosso di Montalcino is harmonious, elegant, savory, and pairs well with foods.

ABOUT CAPARZO

THE STORY: The origins of the place name Caparzo are still unknown. According to some people, the name is derived, as shown by ancient maps, from Ca’ Pazzo; according to others, the term should derive from the Latin Caput Arsum, indicating a “place touched by sun”. The history of Caparzo dates back to the end of the 1960s at the dawning of Brunello di Montalcino, when a group of friends, fond of Tuscany and of wine, purchased an old ruin with vineyards at Montalcino. The farm estate was renovated, modernized, and new vineyards were planted. In a short time, Caparzo made itself known in the Brunello market. In 1998, 30 years after the first rows of vines were planted, the farm estate came to a turning point when Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini purchased Caparzo. With the help of her son, Igino, and daughter, Alessandra, she immediately carried out her objective: combining tradition with innovation to create a high-quality wine that is the expression of an excellent territory.

THE TERROIR: Caparzo covers an overall surface area of 494 acres (223 planted to vines) on all sides of the hill of Montalcino in the best areas of the DOCG. The vineyards of Caparzo, La Casa, La Caduta, Il Cassero, and San Piero Caselle range in altitude from 720-985 ft and are composed of various soil types, including marl, sandy-stone, sandy-clay, and shale-clay. According to tradition, Sangiovese Grosso excels. Regardless of weather trends and climactic patterns, the disposition of the vines and different conformations of the vineyards allow the production of very high-quality wines every year.
